Allied Mineral Products is a leading manufacturer of monolithic refractories worldwide. We are seeking a Process Engineer, Refractory Shapes in our Pell City, Alabama location. This position is responsible for evaluating and improving both new and existing processes in the production of Shapes and configuring manufacturing processes to reduce cost and improve yield, quality, and consistency. This position will support identifying global best practices and will have the ability to communicate these to all affiliates while maintaining Allied culture and standards.

The Process Engineer, Refractory Shapes will also be responsible for estimating material, time and labor costs required to produce precast refractory shapes in response to sales requests for cost. This will be accomplished by analyzing established manufacturing methods, then applying these techniques into a modeled process needed to estimate the manufacturing cost of the new shapes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: Depending on location or assignment, may do one or more of the following:

  • Maintain and create reliable and safe manufacturing systems and processes while improving shape quality, production rates, efficiencies, yields and costs.
  • Create and refine existing and new work instructions and procedures.
  • Audit production processes and shape technicians.
  • Assist with root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
  • Support production to ensure timely project completion.
  • Ensure that financial budgets are adhered to.
  • Respond to questions and problems from customers and sales representatives that are refractory, application, and product design related.
  • Provide back-up for order processing and scheduling.
  • Develop, monitor and report KPIs through existing dashboard.
  • Prepare and/or revise cost estimates for new and current precast shapes for manufacture. A typical estimate may include analyzing drawings, creating part lists, calculating volumes, submitting RFQ for outsourced work, reviewing historical data, and analyzing other associated information to provide lead time and cost estimates in response to customer requests.
  • Maintain cost estimating tools (e.g. – excel spreadsheets) to help with both accuracy and turnaround time of the cost for sales quotations.
  • Source and select suppliers for materials, hardware and supplies. This would include developing estimates for special processes, testing and tooling needed.
  • Work with equipment designers and manufacturing leaders to develop innovative, cost-effective and efficient production processes and manufacturing technology.
  • Communicate and work closely with Allied Engineering group as project requirements dictate.


Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other similar technical field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least five years of related work experience and significant prior project management experience preferred.
  • Strong experience in industrial equipment, such as dust collection, material handling, desired.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical design principles required.
  • Requires excellent troubleshooting skills and a practical approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to use a computer for CAD and other tasks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and human relations skills required.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Additional skills useful to this position include knowledge of industrial electrical controls and PLC programming, prior experience working with HVAC and facilities equipment, or experience with burner or combustion systems.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Ceramic, Material Science, or Metallurgical Engineering, or other related field.
  • 5 years’ experience as process engineer or related field.
  • Excellent written and spoken English language and communications skills.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Quality assurance and manufacturing process experience (familiarity with statistical analysis of process data and lean manufacturing techniques).
  • Experience in engineering, design, CAD software knowledge and drafting skills desired.
  • Ability to read and understand detailed engineering drawings.
  • Past cost estimating experience desired.
  • Proficient organizational, analytical and time management skills.
  • Excellent math skills required.
  • Professional mannerisms and excellent communications skills with ability to meet face to face with co-workers, managers and customers.
  • Strong work ethic, sense of urgency and willingness to multitask.
  • Self-starter and willing to prioritize and assist in project management as required.
  • Knowledge of refractory products and characteristics of refractory, including casting of refractory shapes (knowledge of concrete casting and estimating is similar and applicable) is desired.
  • Must be willing to travel domestically up to 10% of the time.
