Job summary

Integral Engineering Group in Knoxville, TN is seeking a Jr. Process Engineer to support development of process design for complex industrial and government projects.

You will work on PFDs, P&IDs, equipment specs, process calculations, and design documentation, progressively taking ownership of deliverables. The role emphasizes learning from senior engineers, exposure to PHA, regulated environments, and collaboration across engineering disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 0–3 years of relevant engineering experience; strong academic project experience may be considered.
  • Fundamental chemical/process engineering principles including material balances, energy balances, fluid flow, thermodynamics, and process equipment.
  • Strong interest in developing expertise in process design and process safety.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply applicable engineering codes, standards, Federal requirements, and project specifications.
  • Ability to work effectively with senior engineers and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to meet defined project schedules and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate engineering documentation.
  • Successful completion of drug screening.
  • Must meet ITAR U.S. Person requirements (U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance or site badge, if required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and update PFDs and P&IDs under the direction of senior process engineers.
  • Progressively take ownership of assigned P&IDs, ensuring that process equipment, piping, instrumentation, controls, valves, and other design information are accurately represented.
  • Assist with process calculations, equipment sizing, pressure drop calculations, material balances, energy balances, and other engineering analyses.
  • Assist senior and licensed process/chemical engineers with process design activities for industrial, DOE, DoD, and other government projects.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, equipment information, and technical documentation to develop accurate process design deliverables.
  • Coordinate process engineering requirements with mechanical, structural, electrical, instrumentation and controls, civil, and other disciplines.
  • Participate in design reviews and multidisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Support development of equipment and instrument specifications, datasheets, and procurement documentation.
  • Assist with Process Hazard Analyses (PHA/HAZOP) and other process safety activities under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Participate in site visits, facility walkdowns, and field verification activities to collect and document existing process information.
  • Research applicable codes, standards, DOE Orders, project specifications, and other technical requirements.
  • Assist with preparation of engineering calculations, reports, design criteria, technical evaluations, and other project documentation.
  • Review and incorporate comments from senior engineers, project managers, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Organize and prioritize work to meet project schedules and deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively, ask clarifying questions, and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
  • Develop technical knowledge and engineering judgment through mentoring and hands-on project experience.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Jr. Process Engineer to support the development of process engineering designs for complex industrial and government (DoD/DOE) projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer who wants to develop strong practical process engineering skills while working alongside experienced process and chemical engineers.

The Jr. Process Engineer will support the development and maintenance of Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), equipment specifications, process calculations, design documentation, and technical reports. The successful candidate will progressively take ownership of P&IDs and other process design deliverables while learning from senior and licensed engineers.

Experience or interest in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), industrial processes, and highly regulated environments is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate is curious, detail-oriented, willing to ask questions, and motivated to develop into a well-rounded process engineer.

  • F.E. examination passed with the intent to pursue a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Internship or co-op experience in chemical processing, industrial facilities, manufacturing, energy, nuclear, or related engineering environments.
  • Experience developing or modifying P&IDs or PFDs.
  • Familiarity with process simulation software or engineering calculation tools.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or other engineering design software.
  • Exposure to Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), HAZOP, What-If, or similar process safety methodologies.
  • Exposure to DOE, DoD, nuclear, industrial, or other highly regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with process equipment such as pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, vessels, tanks, piping systems, and control systems.
  • Experience participating in facility walkdowns or field data collection.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and take increasing ownership of technical work.
