Job description

OVERVIEW

Merrick & Company is looking for an experienced/senior Process Engineer to join our team in Oak Ridge, TN. We’re seeking candidates who are passionate about nuclear design, enjoy working on a multidisciplinary team, and appreciate the Knoxville, TN area.

In this role, you will primarily focus on innovative nuclear and energy projects. Successful candidates will collaborate with a diverse team of engineers and designers to deliver high-quality design and engineering solutions.

In-office/WFH hybrid schedules are offered.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Independently evaluate and solve complex problems with limited guidance from senior staff.
  • Work with other disciplines to improve accuracy of deliverables, schedule, and budget commitments.
  • Prepares or oversees process design deliverables, including:
    • Process Flow Diagrams
    • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
    • Equipment sizing calculations
    • Process line sizing calculations
    • Pressure relief device sizing calculations
    • Mass & energy balances / process simulations
    • Equipment and instrument datasheets
    • Piping/equipment specifications
  • Interpret customer requirements or code/standard requirements to establish design criteria.
  • Lead or actively contribute to client meetings and technical discussions and develop strong client relationships.
  • Support business development efforts through preparation of technical scopes and proposal estimates.
  • Provide in-depth and comprehensive technical peer reviews on design documents in a timely manner.
  • Technical work/documents are mostly error free and demonstrate self‑checking of work before submitting documents for peer review.
  • Be accountable for the technical quality and completeness of process design deliverables.
  • Lead process design efforts on projects and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Determine feasibility of designing new plant equipment or modifying existing facilities considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning and other technical and economic factors.
  • Able to perform almost all process design tasks independently.
  • Lead a team of more junior engineers and designers on projects.
  • Act as a formal supervisor and mentor to more junior engineers.
  • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary design team environment.
  • Stamp design documents as a Professional Engineer (PE), as applicable.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License required, or ability to obtain it within 12 months of hire.
  • 8+ years of related engineering experience.
  • Process Lead experience includes supervising, leading, managing and mentoring a team of electrical engineers and designers on concurrent projects.
  • Experience using ChemCad/Aspen/HYSYS (or similar) process simulator and AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow (or similar) for hydraulic pipe flow modeling preferred.
  • Exhibits generally sound technical knowledge to produce design deliverables with minimal guidance from senior engineers.
  • Acquires general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields and ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Working knowledge of industry codes and standards.
  • Ability to apply reasoning with minimal supervision.
  • Possesses effective oral and written communication skills with both teammates and clients.
  • Assists with client, vendor or official contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignments or meetings.
  • Display ability to review technical design documents/packages and be able to identify issues/pitfalls and actively propose solutions.
  • Act as peer reviewer to design documents authored by junior engineers and provide quality engineering reviews.
  • Client projects for this position require US citizenship.
