Job summary

Balchem Corporation in Montvale, New Jersey, is seeking a Process Engineer to apply engineering design standards, optimize production and packaging, and support safety and continuous improvement initiatives.

You will collaborate with R&D, corporate engineering, and operations to develop and implement process improvements, create P&IDs, SOPs, and maintenance plans, and lead cross-functional teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical or biosystems engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong safety orientation and ability to manage priorities.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and TPM systems.
  • Ability to lead teams and develop others in a multi-cultural, fast-paced setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for design standards, process capabilities, scale-ups and hazard analysis.
  • Develop engineering packages, P&IDs, drawings and controls narratives for process improvements.
  • Create and maintain maintenance plans, SOPs and material masters.
  • Collaborate with R&D, corporate engineering and sites to deliver capabilities.
  • Lead and mentor resources on projects, driving on-time delivery and quality.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Process Engineer provides technical expertise for the design standards, process capabilities, scale-ups, hazard analysis, performance monitoring, technical training and continuous improvements for a site or group of locations within the HNH business. This position will plan, support, and where applicable, execute engineering deliverables for the site’s production and packaging functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides technical leadership to enable new product or process development by collaborating with research and development, corporate engineering and/ or technical groups from other locations to develop engineering packages to deliver the capabilities required.
  • Provides technical expertise to generate and track value by implementing improvements to existing processes and to provide guidance for process safety evaluations.
  • Designs experiments with internal and external resources to reduce variation, validate process change, or evaluate a project’s cost/ benefit
  • Develops project scopes, justification, P&IDs, drawings, and controls narratives to plan, support, and execute process improvements.
  • Authors and reviews documents including Preventive Maintenance plans, Standard Operating Procedures, Material Masters, and other forms.
  • Leads and provide direction for other operational and engineering resources assigned to projects and processes, including coaching, mentoring and knowledge development.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging manufacturing technology trends and developments and incorporate into design requirements.
  • Works with limited direction, using additional research and interpretation to identify issues/problems.
  • Responsible for technical support and improvement in the areas of material handling, ingredients preparation, receiving, CIP, and liquid & powder processing.

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical or biosystems engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant experience, minimum of 5 years in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong safety orientation
  • Specific knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and TPM systems
  • Clear sense of urgency and ability to manage priorities to meet immediate needs and long-term goals
  • Ability to manage time and workload efficiently, and the ability to prioritize and modify priorities accordingly
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work and develop others in a team environment
  • Sensitive to other cultures/backgrounds, able to work in a multi-cultural workplace
  • Demonstrated ability to function in a fast-paced environment while moving multiple simultaneous projects forward
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to discuss, develop, and implement plan
  • High sensitivity to quality and on time delivery of commitments
  • Ability to develop others
PREFERRED:
  • Food or pharmaceutical packaging
  • Working understanding of PLC’s
  • Knowledge of Computer- Aided Design Software
  • Knowledge of OSIsoft PI System
  • Past understanding of food GMP’s and hygienic design
  • Specific knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and TPM systems
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear
  • Often required to spend time in plant environments with operating and maintenance personnel requiring one to kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, ascend and descend stairs and/or ladders
  • Vision requirements include close vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
