Job summary

Balchem Corporation is seeking a Maintenance Technician to help keep plant equipment running smoothly in Minnesota. The role involves repairing and maintaining boilers, HVAC systems and other plant equipment, with emphasis on preventing downtime and ensuring quality.

Primary responsibility is to provide the facility and manufacturing departments with proper machine maintenance and repair in order to reduce unscheduled downtime. This position is responsible for new equipment installation and troubleshooting for all equipment within the facility in order to maintain maximum output with appropriate quality. This position is also involved in the Preventative Maintenance (PM) and safety programs.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain, repair and troubleshoot boilers, HVAC and other plant systems.
  • Perform repairs and/or replace defective parts using hand tools and power tools and reassemble equipment. Monitor startup to ensure a smooth transition to operations.
  • Coordinate and participate in PM (preventative maintenance) tasks on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  • Perform troubleshooting of equipment issues and perform maintenance on all of the facility equipment to correct problems. Accurately assess when to call in additional support from other maintenance team members and management.
  • Perform needed testing of equipment and make corrective adjustments to eliminate upsets during production.
  • Understand and be able to train others on the processes for machine repair in all areas of the facility.
  • Document all adjustments and repairs made to the machines during the shift.
  • Cross‑trained to troubleshoot all equipment issues and repair.
  • Perform all tasks and duties of the Preventative Maintenance Technician.
  • Promote GMP compliance and help correct GMP issues.
  • Promote quality awareness and help correct quality issues.
  • Monitor downtime and communicate with the Manager/Supervisor when standards are not met.
  • Understand the product specs and operating standards by customer product and implement the necessary equipment for the departments.
  • Basic use of hand tools ranging from common hand and power tools to precision measuring equipment and electrical and electronic testing devices.
  • Install and repair wiring, electrical and electronic components, high‑pressure systems, and plumbing (steam, air, water, wastewater, etc.).
  • Learn, understand, train to, develop and follow documented policies, procedures, and work procedures and drive others to do so.
  • Maintain downtime data on the daily productivity board. Assist in maintaining detailed and organized data records for the department.
  • Assist in the development of work instructions, training, and auditing team members, and assisting in special projects.
  • Responsible for compliance with all right‑to‑know, lock‑out, tag‑out, and other safety training.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and an orderly work area. Support 5S initiatives.
  • Document and monitor procedures and processes to eliminate variation and promote sharing of knowledge.
  • Assist in the implementation of productivity improvements.
  • Interact and function effectively in a high‑performance team environment.
  • Operate basic machine fabricating equipment such as a lathe and mill in order to repair equipment or build parts for emergency repairs.
  • Source and order parts in catalogs or online. Provide information to the Manager/Supervisor for approvals.
  • Support and assist as needed in maintaining and improving the maintenance department.
  • Initiate and support continuous improvement and elimination of waste and variation in processes using established improvement processes.
  • Must develop cooperative relationships with other departments.
  • All other duties as necessary to the success of Balchem Corporation.
Requirements
  • 1-2 years of related experience in a progressive manufacturing setting. Food or pharmaceutical packaging a plus.
  • Previous experience working with machines either in troubleshooting or set up processes.
  • Knowledge of food GMP’s a plus.
  • Boiler license – 2nd class B or above (preferred).
