Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a Process Engineer to lead technical projects aimed at product and process improvements at the Seminole Mill. You will support operating departments to achieve goals, drive continuous improvement, and manage data-driven processes.

Key duties include implementing trials, collaborating with Operations, E&I, and Process Control, and owning PI Vision and Process Book documentation. Strong data skills and paper-industry experience are preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or paper science preferred.
• Experience with plant information systems (PI Vision, LabVIEW, etc.).
• Experience with Excel, Minitab and data manipulation.
• Strong problem-solving and process-analysis skills to drive improvements.
• Strong communication skills to convey data to operations and management.
• Collaborative, cross-functional teamwork experience.
• Experience in the paper industry preferred.

The Opportunity:

The Smurfit Westrock Seminole Mill is a 100% recycled paper mill. As a Process Engineer you will be responsible for managing technical projects aimed at product and process problem-solving and/or improvements, cost reduction, and profitability improvement. You will provide technical assistance to the operating departments to help them achieve the mill’s goals and objectives while driving continuous process improvement.

How you will impact Smurfot Westrock:

• Determine and implement process changes and/or trials to improve operating efficiency and performance and minimize variation
• Partner with operations, E&I, and Process Control Engineers to understand all processes and how teams and individuals are involved and impacted at each step
• Assist operations leadership with daily issues/troubleshooting, as needed.
• Serve as the owner and subject matter expert for Process Book and PI Vision (the mill’s software to view Distributed Control System equipment), ensuring that all data and documentation is accurate and up to date
• Gather and cleanse production and process data and perform statistical/analytical tests to uncover important variables and their impacts for day-to-day operations, continuous improvement projects, and trials.
• Generate production reporting, create process monitoring reports, and perform daily troubleshooting of the process
• Review and share best practices with peers in technical subject areas including computer software and systems
• Regularly communicate process-related data to operations and management in readily consumable way
• Support capital projects from a process capability.
• Fill in as a shift coordinator and assistant superintendent, as needed. The goal is to develop this position for future operations leadership roles.
• Own the inventory of certain mill consumables.

What you need to succeed:

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or paper science preferred
• Experience with plant information systems. i.e., PI Vision, LabView, etc.
• Experience with manipulating data with Excel, Minitab, etc.
• Strong problem-solving and process-analysis skills to evaluate data and make decisions to drive process improvements
• Possess effective communication skills to clearly convey process-related data to operations and management in readily consumable way
• Proven track record of collaboration within cross functional teams
• Work experience in the paper industry or similar industry through a previous job, internship or co-op is preferred
