About the Role

Our client, a reputable pharmaceutical manufacturer, is seeking a highly skilled Process Development Chemist to drive innovation in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates. This role is based in **Welkom, Free State**, and is integral to the company's commitment to advancing healthcare solutions. You will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and scaling up synthetic routes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and key intermediates. This position demands a strong background in organic chemistry, process chemistry, and a passion for bringing new therapies from the lab to production. Key Responsibilities

• Design and execute laboratory experiments to develop robust and scalable synthetic routes for pharmaceutical intermediates.
• Optimize reaction conditions to improve yield, purity, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
• Conduct process hazard assessments (PHAs) and ensure compliance with stringent safety regulations.
• Develop and validate analytical methods for process monitoring and quality control.
• Perform impurity profiling and characterization of intermediates and APIs.
• Scale-up processes from laboratory bench to pilot plant and commercial manufacturing.
• Collaborate with formulation scientists and manufacturing teams to ensure successful technology transfer.
• Troubleshoot process-related issues encountered during development and manufacturing.
• Maintain detailed records of experiments, analyses, and process parameters in accordance with GMP guidelines.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in synthetic organic chemistry and process development.

Requirements

• Master's or PhD in Organic Chemistry, Process Chemistry, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in process development within the pharmaceutical or fine chemical industry.
• Strong understanding of synthetic organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and purification techniques.
• Proven experience with process safety evaluation and scale-up challenges.
• Proficiency in analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, NMR, and Mass Spectrometry.
• Experience with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is essential.
• Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• Strong documentation and reporting skills.
• Ability to work independently and effectively in a cross-functional team.
• Must be legally authorized to work in South Africa.
