Base pay range

$70,000.00/yr - $100,000.00/yr

Design instrumentation, electrical and process control and automation systems (new and enhancements) to improve the company’s production quality and efficiency as well as compliance with health and safety standards and regulations. Assist other departments (i.e. operations, maintenance, environmental, etc.) in diagnosing and resolving problems and issues. Perform programming on the plant’s Emerson DeltaV DCS (Distributed Control System) network which includes Analog, Fieldbus, Discrete, Modbus, and other style communications systems.

Position Description - Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

Function as a part of a multi-discipline project team to develop conceptual designs, cost estimates, and final designs for capital projects, as assigned by management. Work products include:

  • Assist process engineers in developing instrumentation and control system conceptual designs for inclusion in Process Design Packages.
  • Develop cost estimates for inclusion in AFEs.
  • Participate in HAZOP and safety system reviews.
  • Assist project leader in developing and maintain project schedule.
  • Develop work scopes for equipment vendors, engineering firms and installation contractors. Submit work scopes to purchasing to obtain bids. Participate in bid review and evaluation. Work with project manager and purchasing to evaluate and process scope changes and change order requests.
  • If not contracted out, develop the control system programming configurations and operator graphics for the project’s scope of work. If contracted out, direct the contractor in their development and serve as the interface between the contractor and other disciplines and departments.
  • Oversee instrumentation and electrical installation contractors and/or plant maintenance personnel.
  • Participate in the checkout and start-up of the new equipment and controls.

For capital projects involving process control and automation only function as the project leader, as assigned by management with the following changed and additional responsibilities from above:

  • Serve as project leader.
  • Track AFE costs and schedules.

Participate in developing the response to Engineering Requests, as assigned by management.

Respond to requests for assistance from operations and maintenance to analyze controls system response data to explain anomalies in process operations.

Respond to requests from operations to make adjustments in process control tuning and other system adjustments. Document adjustments and inform others when they are complete.

Generate MOCs for process control changes, as directed by management.

Direct the system administration and maintenance activities for the process control system utilizing the services of both internal personnel and those of the system vendor.

Keep up to date on control system capabilities and enhancements.

Attend safety training as directed by management.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong aptitude and sound understanding in the principles of process control.
  • Well rounded knowledge in industry standards and practices.
  • Fluent in the use of personal computer software, especially Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint, and DeltaV programming software.
  • Ability to quickly comprehend technical requirements and issues, and resolve to meet refinery and project guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate with coworkers in several other Company departments including Operations, Maintenance, Safety, Inspection, Financial, and Senior Management.
  • Ability to participate and present information in meetings with peers and Senior Management.
Work Environment

While daily activities are based in an office environment, there will be regular interaction and participation in activities that require a presence in a shop or field environment. There will be periods that require more than 40 hours per week, including weekends. This position will require being on-call for weekend and after-hours coverage on a rotating schedule with other Process Control Engineers.

Physical Demands

Moderate. However, field activities can include entry into confined spaces, navigating among field equipment and piping, and ladder/stair access to structural platforms. Exposure to construction areas should be expected and common. Field activities will require Personnel Protection Equipment (PPE).

  • Position requires significant use of computer and calculator. Computer programs utilized can include Microsoft Office, and Emerson DeltaV.
Required Education and Experience
  • 4 year degree or previous experience in instrumentation, control systems programming and DCS/PLC experience a plus.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • B.S. in Chemical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering; 5 to 10 years of petrochemical process control engineering experience preferred but not required.
