Job summary

Nelnet is seeking a Process Automation Developer to design, develop and support automation solutions that streamline manual processes and reduce risk. The Process Automation Developer is responsible for the development and support of technical automation solutions. These automation solutions streamline manual processes, improve operational efficiency, and reduce compliance risk.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develops and supports technical automation solutions, using a variety of methods, tools, and platforms.
  • Continuously improves and refines existing automation solutions, identifying opportunities for optimization and increased efficiency.
  • Provides technical support and troubleshooting assistance to team members as needed.
  • Executes assigned automation tasks and projects independently once scoped by an Engineer.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborates with Engineers, Business Process Analysts, and other technical resources to clarify project requirements and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Actively participates in team meetings, project discussions, and knowledge-sharing sessions, contributing to a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Escalates process gaps, ambiguous requirements, or blockers to an Engineer.
  • Provides guidance to junior team members and peers.

US Citizenship and the ability to obtain a 6C Federal security clearance are required for this role.

Nelnet believes in a hybrid work environment that accommodates both in-office and remote work. The standard hybrid work schedule includes a 24/16 hour (in-office/work-from-home) split for associates that reside within 30 miles of an office. Starting Annual Salary Range for this role is $65k - $75k

Education
  • Four-year college degree preferred or equivalent practical experience.
Experience
  • 1+ years of development experience in Python.
  • 1+ years of experience working with front- or back-end data environments, data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and/or data analytics.
Competencies - Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
  • Proficient Python programming and critical thinking skills, with a strong desire to learn and grow in process automation and optimization.
  • Working knowledge of automation tools and platforms, such as SQL, the Microsoft Office suite, and AI tooling.
  • Consistent application of software development lifecycles, development best practices, and Kanban methodologies.
  • Experience with APIs, databases, and other back-end data environments.
  • Aptitude for building and deploying automation solutions based on project requirements and timelines.
  • Active collaboration with team members during the planning process to understand and refine project scope and objectives.
  • Adaptable and flexible within an agile environment, adjusting to shifting circumstances, tasks, and personnel.
  • Proficiency in testing solutions, ensuring functionality and data integrity align with business requirements and deadlines.
  • Adherence to review processes for all code written and a continual drive for improvement in the delivery of solutions.
  • Commitment to human-in-the-loop review practices, including thoughtful oversight of AI-assisted documentation, development, and testing outputs.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the capacity to engage diverse audiences, including technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Solid multitasking, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Capacity to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
