Job summary

Smith+Naphew is seeking a Laboratory Specialist in Andover, MA to provide expert hands-on laboratory support during surgical training courses and events. You will demonstrate instrument use, troubleshoot equipment, and collaborate with multiple teams to ensure high-quality training experiences.

Ideal candidates will have a Bachelor's in a scientific field, 10+ years in medical or lab settings, strong communication skills, and SAP experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 10 years in medical, healthcare, or laboratory settings.
  • Experience working directly with healthcare professionals, preferably in a surgical environment.
  • Surgical procedures, products and devices knowledge.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with customer-facing experience.
  • Understanding of health and safety practices for biological materials and labs.
  • Experience with inventory and document management systems; SAP preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented, able to work independently and in a team.
  • Flexibility for varying work schedules and occasional travel (domestic and international).

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary laboratory support and expert guidance to visiting healthcare professionals during surgical training events.
  • Demonstrate use of surgical instruments, implants and equipment to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory equipment and escalate issues as needed.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Medical Education, Marketing, R&D, and Sales Training teams to run training programs and visits.
  • Handle human tissue specimens in line with SOPs and regulatory requirements.
  • Support training and development of internal staff across departments.
  • Manage laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, specimen care, inventory, PPE and housekeeping.
  • Contribute to compliance through SOP/risk review, documentation control, and regulatory adherence.
  • Keep health, safety, and environmental records up to date while supporting continuous improvement.

Join our Medical Education team as a Laboratory Specialist and play a vital role in delivering exceptional surgical training experiences. Based in Andover, MA, you will support healthcare professionals and Smith+Naphew colleagues by providing hands on laboratory expertise, technical guidance, and operational support within a world class training environment. What will you be doing?
  • Provide primary laboratory support and expert practical guidance to visiting healthcare professionals during surgical training courses and educational events.
  • Demonstrate the use of surgical instruments, implants, and equipment to maximize learning opportunities and support effective training delivery.
  • Troubleshoot Smith+Naphew and laboratory equipment, escalating issues when required.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Medical Education, Marketing, Research and Development, and Sales Training teams to facilitate successful training programs and customer visits.
  • Handle human tissue specimens in accordance with local SOPs and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the training and development of internal employees, including sales, marketing, research and development, and leadership team members.
  • Manage laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, specimen care, inventory control, PPE and consumables management, and housekeeping activities.
  • Support compliance activities through SOP and risk assessment review, documentation management, and adherence to governing body requirements.
  • Maintain accurate health, safety, and environmental records while supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
What will you need to be successful?
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working in a medical, healthcare, or laboratory environment.
  • Experience working directly with healthcare professionals, ideally within a surgical setting.
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, surgical products, and relevant medical devices.
  • Customer facing experience with strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Understanding of health and safety practices related to biological materials and laboratory environments.
  • Experience with inventory management and document management systems, with SAP experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team.
  • Flexibility to support varying work schedules and occasional domestic and international travel.

The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $81,750 - $122,000 USD annually (or hourly) The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate. In addition to base pay, we provide competitive bonus and benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401k, tuition reimbursement, medical leave programs, parental leave, and generous PTO, paid company holidays annually and 8 hours of Volunteer time and a variety of wellness offerings such as EAP.
