Job description

Probationary School Social Worker for 2025-2026 Middle School Level (5-8)

Start Date:

September 1, 2025

General Responsibilities:
  1. The School Social Worker will employ consultative skills to work with teachers, parents, and school leaders to develop plans and strategies to improve students' academic performance and social-emotional development.
  2. Work as part of the student support service/mental health team at the building and district level.
  3. Utilize research-based interventions and culturally sensitive practices.
  4. Promote and support tiered intervention programs and services to intervene both directly and indirectly with children's academic, behavioral, and emotional problems.
  5. Support social-emotional learning (SEL) initiatives.
  6. Establish knowledge of and linkages to community-based agencies and resources available to students and families, where appropriate.
General Requirements:
  1. New York State School Social Worker Certification.
  2. New York State social work licensure (LCSW preferred).
  3. High culturally responsive awareness and practices, with knowledge of the educational impacts of trauma and creative approaches to addressing students' needs.
  4. Ability to be empathetic, caring, understanding, and to cultivate an empowering environment for all students.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain rapport and trust with students, families, school personnel, and community-based providers.
  6. Strong organizational and communication skills to support student case management and engage effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and the school community.
  7. Ability to observe carefully, listen attentively, and make impartial, informed recommendations for students and families.
  8. Creativity and insight into supporting multi-tiered systems of supports, interventions, and services.
  9. Fully trained in crisis intervention/response such as Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) preferred or willingness to become trained.
Benefits and Salary:

Based on the South Colonie Teachers Association Contract, starting at least at Schedule 1, Step 1, or $56,546.00, depending on experience and transcripts. Competitive benefits included.
