About the Role

The Adult Probation Department exists to promote the administration of justice and keep communities safe. The work isn't abstract — it's direct, daily contact with people navigating the criminal justice system, holding them accountable while helping them make real, lasting changes in their lives.

This is a classified civil service position included in a voluntary recognition bargaining unit (union), which may include union dues.

What you'll do
  • Conduct pre-sentence and other investigations for the Court of Common Pleas, preparing accurate, thorough reports for judicial review.
  • Supervise a caseload of clients granted supervision by the Court, ensuring they meet all court-ordered conditions.
  • Monitor compliance with supervision requirements — employment, treatment, community service, financial obligations, and more.
  • Apply evidence-based practices to assess risk, identify needs, and connect clients with appropriate services and interventions.
  • Maintain detailed case records and documentation in accordance with department standards.
  • Coordinate with judges, attorneys, law enforcement, treatment providers, and community organizations.
  • Respond to violations and prepare violation reports; appear in court as required.
  • Work to reduce recidivism by encouraging accountability and supporting positive behavioral change.
About you
  • Genuine interest in criminal justice, public safety, and working directly with a high-need population.
  • Ability to manage a caseload independently, prioritize competing demands, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills — you'll write a lot of reports and spend a lot of time talking to people.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Comfortable working in a structured, regulated environment with clear legal and ethical boundaries.
Requirements
  • Must successfully complete a six (6) month probationary period following hire.
  • Must obtain state-mandated Probation Officer certification within six (6) months of hire.
What to expect

This is onsite work in a court-affiliated government setting. Caseloads can be demanding and the work involves regular contact with individuals who may be in crisis or non-compliant. It requires professionalism, consistency, and a genuine commitment to the department's mission.
