Position Overview
Under close supervision, Probation Aides learn to apply the principles and techniques of probation work, supervise and counsel individuals detained in or committed to county juvenile institutions, supervise minors assigned to Work Project, and provide close supervision of minors placed on home supervision. Probation Aides are typically hired as temporary replacements for regular Probation staff who are absent due to vacation, sick leave, military duty, leave without pay, or other reasons. All Probation Aide positions are currently temporary intermittent positions, known as on‑call positions, limited to 1560 hours worked per year.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles and techniques applicable to the care and rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents.
- Knowledge of the growth, development, needs, and problems of minors.
- Knowledge of symptoms of behavior disorders, group dynamics, and codes, standards and regulations governing the treatment of juveniles in juvenile hall, camps, ranches or schools.
- Knowledge of investigative principles and laws governing search, seizure and preservation of evidence.
- Knowledge of counseling techniques, basic housekeeping, hygienic standards, motivational techniques, crisis intervention, self‑defense, appropriate use of force and security techniques.
- Knowledge of rights and liabilities of peace officers.
Responsibilities
- Apply principles and techniques of probation work.
- Supervise and counsel individuals detained, committed to, or sheltered in county juvenile institutions.
- Supervise minors assigned to the Work Project.
- Provide close supervision of minors placed on home supervision.
- Maintain records and prepare concise reports.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Qualifications
- Associate of Arts degree (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) from an accredited college or university.
- Up to one year of required education may be substituted by experience in full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid law enforcement or correctional work in a probation agency, parole agency, or correctional institution (173.6 hours = 21.7 days = 1 work month = 3 semester or 4.5 quarter units).
- Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
- Ability to conduct reports, maintain records, communicate with individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and work well in a team.
Special Requirements
- Compliance with California Government Code, Section 1031.
- Background and criminal history check; felony conviction is grounds for disqualification.
- Physical requirements include standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, and lifting individuals.
- Possession of a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, at time of appointment.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, holidays, and weekends.
- Six‑month probationary period.
