Summary

  • A Respiratory Therapist Level 1 (RT1) is a member of the healthcare team who provides expertise in managing patients of all ages with respiratory diseases or acute conditions impacting their ability to breathe. The RT1 provides respiratory care in general, critical care, and emergency room environments. This is an entry-level position for new graduates of a respiratory care program or those licensed with the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential but not yet the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Responsibilities

  • Perform physical assessments of pulmonary status and recommend appropriate respiratory care.
  • Administer oxygen via standard and specialized delivery devices, including heated high flow devices and hyperbaric chambers.
  • Administer aerosolized medications via nebulizer, MDI, DPI, or other devices.
  • Administer prescribed inhaled nitric oxide or aerosolized prostacyclin.
  • Evaluate and maintain artificial airways of various sizes.
  • Set up, adjust, maintain, and clean mechanical ventilators.
  • Perform advanced procedures on patients with severe hypoxemia, including prone positioning and lung recruitment maneuvers.
  • Set up, adjust, maintain, and clean non-invasive BiPAP & CPAP devices.
  • Transport critically ill patients on respiratory modalities.
  • Respond to hospital emergencies such as rapid response and code calls.
  • Utilize approved RT protocols.
  • Perform ABG and other diagnostic tests to evaluate disease extent or treatment effectiveness.
  • Perform EKG testing, phlebotomy, IV insertion, and other roles as needed.
  • Document patient care activities and charges electronically.
  • Complete annual competencies and continuing education per hospital policy and licensing requirements.
  • Maintain active RT credentials and PA state RT license.
  • Perform duties in accordance with Penn Medicine values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system.

Credentials

  • License to Practice as a Respiratory Therapist in PA (Required)
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist by NBRC required within 1 year of hire (Required)
  • BLS Healthcare Provider Certification (Required)
  • ACLS (NRP preferred, required within 6 months of hire)

Education or Equivalent Experience

  • Associate's Degree in Respiratory Care with at least 500 clinical hours (Required)
  • Graduate of CoARC-accredited Respiratory Care program (Required)
  • Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)
