Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently obtain and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks, including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter cares for patients who are medically isolated.
  • Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, specimen collection, and application of binders and braces.
  • Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, including phlebotomy, ECG lead/12-lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
  • Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
  • Provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
  • Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
  • Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishment, and record patients' intake.
  • Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
  • Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
  • Provide patient comfort measures through social interactions.
  • Share responsibility for preparation, proper use, and care of equipment and supplies, and for maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of the unit.
  • Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies for diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses.
  • Clean areas according to designated guidelines, demonstrating proper use of disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of housekeeping equipment.
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
