McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, UT seeks a Patient Care Technician to support the patient care team in the Same Day Surgery/PACU Recovery Room. PRN with 8/10/12-hour shifts, weekday schedule, and occasional on-call.

Patient Care Technician – Job Description

The Patient Care Technician functions as a clinical support partner, assisting the patient care team by performing various tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional. Additionally, the Patient Care Technician may assume the responsibilities of a Health Unit Coordinator.

Department/Unit

Same Day Surgery / PACU Recovery Room

Shifts / Schedule

PRN | As‑needed hours/week | 8, 10, and 12‑hour shifts. Monday – Friday, variable day/evening schedule. Occasional on‑call required.

Pay

Starting at $18.40+ (based on patient care experience). Hourly range: $18.40 – $23.92.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize and deliver basic patient care, including toileting, bathing, linen and clothing changes, fresh water and ice, ambulating, comfort measures, and other patient needs, while providing excellent customer service when responding to patient and family requests.
• Report and record patient care findings and data in a timely manner.
• Report changes in the patient condition quickly and secure qualified assistance as needed.
• May perform telemetry duties as required based on the unit.
• Act as a patient care attendant by monitoring patients, addressing patient care needs, and collaborating with other members of the patient care team as required.
• Transport medications from the delivery system to the RN as required when working on a clinical unit.
• Collaborate and consult with the RN and other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient care.
• May assume the responsibilities of a health unit coordinator, including answering phones, transcribing physician orders, managing unit records, organizing, stocking, and maintaining unit supplies.
• Implement the plan of care as delegated.
• Perform assigned duties within Scope of Practice.
• Perform specialized procedures with skill validation and according to regulatory standards.
• Foster a safe environment by complying with the safety policy and taking appropriate action in an emergency.

Certification Requirements

At the time of hire, Utah candidates must meet one of the following: Certified Nursing Assistant Certification in the state of Utah (if the certificate is expired, it must be renewed before the start date); completion of a recent Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program (must be completed within the past year), and the certification must be obtained within 120 days of hire; completion of a Fundamentals of Nursing Course (must have earned a passing grade within the past two years) with official transcript. CNA certification must be obtained within 120 days of hire.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) in the state of practice.
• Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
• Basic computer literacy skills.
• Written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• One (1) year Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) experience.
• Six (6) months CNA experience in a hospital setting.

Physical Requirements

• Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require verbal communication and hearing spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, especially during emergency situations.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients.
• Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, typically including items of varying weights up to and including heavy items.
• Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items, and often navigating crowded and busy rooms.
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
• For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
