Job description

Position Summary

Per diem Medical/Clinical Lab Scientist to join the Torrington Community Hospital laboratory team in Torrington, WY. The role requires advanced technical knowledge, application of testing procedures, and complex problem-solving skills. The incumbent serves as a department resource, assisting with compliance to accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements such as CLIA ’88, JCAHO, CAP, and OSHA.

Core Functions
  1. Perform testing accurately and timely according to established policies and performance standards. Manage startup, calibration, and accuracy of procedures and instrumentation. Participate in advanced decision‑making and problem‑solving activities. Demonstrate advanced use of all computer systems and clinical relevance testing.
  2. Ensure test validity and monitor abnormal patient or QC results. Detect and document deviations from procedures. Support quality assurance activities, monitor department indicators of productivity and quality, and engage in process improvement initiatives.
  3. Monitor and control laboratory inventory. Assist in providing financial data and participate in financial process improvement to reduce costs and improve productivity.
  4. Contribute to departmental and system projects. Participate in training of staff and be involved with committees, teams, or special projects. Provide input for employee competency and annual assessments and complete training modules for new or transferred personnel.
  5. Serve as a departmental resource by providing educational information to internal and external customers. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and promote a constructive learning environment.
  6. Process and prepare patient samples as required, including specimen collection, general laboratory specimen processing, and referral laboratory processing, ensuring correct identification and specimen integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MLS certification or an equivalent certification (ASCP, AMT, HEW, AAB).
  • Associate degree in laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience that meets CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489.
  • Foreign‑educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF or another nationally recognized credentialing agency.
  • Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy where applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MLS/MT or categorical certification (ASCP, AMT, HEW, AAB).
  • Basic knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
  • Previous experience with phlebotomy and specimen processing, and additional related education or experience.
