Job summary

UCF Lake Nona Hospital in Orlando, part of HCA Healthcare, is seeking a PRN Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist to join our clinical team. The role supports specimen collection, processing, registration, and liaison with referral labs in a fast-paced hospital setting.

You will perform venipunctures, ensure proper labeling, enter orders, maintain documentation, and assist with clerical tasks while upholding safety and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

• Vocational/Technical Degree preferred.
• 1-3 years in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
• Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Paramedic or EMT certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collect specimens and prepare them for testing.
• Perform venipunctures and finger sticks per patient needs.
• Label and document specimens according to protocol.
• Enter orders and manage patient registration.
• Maintain quality and regulatory compliance in daily tasks.
• Support clerical duties and specimen processing.

Lab Assistant / Phlebotomistperforms any three of the following non-technical functions under the supervision of thedepartmentsupervisor,manageror director. They collect specimens, process specimens,submitand monitor specimens submitted tothe referrallaboratories and patient registration.Performsduties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements. Supports the department in achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities.

What you will do in this role:

• Demonstrates a thorough understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements as well as specimen rejection criteria
• Demonstratesproficiencyin venipunctures and/orfinger stickson pediatric, neonatal, adults and geriatric patients 3. Demonstratesproficiencyinheel stickson infants (as patient populationrequires)
• Utilizes supplies appropriately
• Follows established procedures for patient identification and specimencollection-basedtest orders
• Completesappropriate specimencollection documentation
• Educates patient and/or familyregardingspecimen collection procedures prior to obtaining specimen
• Usescomputer informationsystemrelativeto job functions
• Responsible for clerical duties (i.e., faxing, phones, pneumatic tube system, reports)
• Demonstrates ability to deal with priorities first and plans for completion of duties
• Reviews Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and pending specimen collections/accessioning issues;takes actionas appropriate
• Receives laboratory specimens into the laboratory information system
• Performs registration and order entry procedures, asrequested, with accuracy, andin a timely manner
• Labels specimens and aliquots according to established protocols and according to testing ordered
• Demonstrates a thorough understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements as well as specimen rejection criteria
• Centrifuges and aliquots specimens appropriately, based on specimen type and tests ordered.
• Prepares specimens to be ready for courier pick-up and includes special instructions as requested by physician orders
• Discards laboratory specimens according to established schedule
• Performs periodic preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned
• Collects chain-of-custody drug collections according toestablishpolicy (as laboratory may require)
• Keepsappropriate records/documentationrelating to specimen problems and other problemsencountered, takes corrective action as necessary to ensure validity and accuracy of testing
• Cleans the area upon emergency spills of specimens
• Assessmentspecimen requirements for referral testing andtroubleshootsany specimen requirement and/or referral testing specimen or order entry issues.
• Processes, sorts, and prepares specimens for submission to referral laboratories for testingin accordance withspecimen requirements for tests ordered.
• Regularlymonitorsand reviews the status of referred testing toassurethat results are received and made available to physicians within established turnaround times.
• Reviews Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and pending referral testing issues;takes actionas appropriate
• Communicates and troubleshoots any problem specimensin a timely manner.

• Requires 2 + years’ experienceperforming registration, clerical duties, and sending out of specimenprocessing 6. Follows safety policies and procedures
• Protects sensitive and confidential information by activelyparticipatingin the Privacy & Security Awareness program
• Adheres to company policies and standardsregardingsecurity
• Completes assigned courses and training on an annual basis
• Available to work during disasters

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
