Job summary

Medical Pathology Associates in Houston, Texas, is seeking a PRN Histology Technician to support our pathology services. The role runs Tuesday through Saturday, 2:00 am to 7:00 am, enabling continuous specimen processing and diagnostic preparation for our pathologists.

You will produce high-quality diagnostic materials, perform grossing and embedding, and assist with IHC and reference lab work as needed, while maintaining strict quality control and LIS documentation.

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • Preference for an Associate or Bachelor degree in a related science, NAACLS histotechnician/ histotechnologist program, or 60 college credits with biology/chemistry.
  • Valid HT/HTL registration; QIHC preferred.
  • 1–5 years of prior histology experience.

Responsibilities

  • Produce high quality diagnostic materials as directed by the pathologist.
  • Perform grossing, processing, embedding and routine H&E slides.
  • Prepare special stains, recuts, deeper cuts, and additional slide presentations.
  • Perform IHC in-house or via reference labs as needed.
  • Support send-out, reference, and related laboratory work.
  • Conduct quality control and document processes in the LIS and other systems.
  • Maintain and clean instrumentation and work areas.
  • Follow bloodborne pathogen safety methods and PPE.
  • Operate LIS to manage workflow, look up cases, and document inquiries.
  • With credentials, may assist in gross dissection.

We process tissue in a state-of-the-art laboratory that is centrally located in Houston, Texas. Through rigorous quality assurance and an expertise in pathology, MPA strives to continually improve diagnostic precision and ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

This position is PRN, Tuesday-Saturday, 2:00 am - 7:00 am

The Histology Technician produces HIGH QUALITY diagnostic and testing materials for our Pathologist on specimens received from clients on patients. All three entities are our customers and the work of the Histologist- from start to archive- is expected to be exemplary, with attention to detail and great care to protect and serve these customers in the best manner possible.

Key Job Functions
  • Produce high quality diagnostic materials as requested by the pathologist to progress each specimen. These materials may be generated in any of the following processes:
  • Grossing, processing, embedding and routine H&E slides
  • Special stains, recuts, deepers, and other additional slide presentations
  • IHC, either in house or through affiliated reference labs
  • Supporting send-out, reference or other related work requested by, or of, our laboratory
  • Performs Quality Control and documentation of all recorded processes using the laboratory information system, spreadsheets, and manual methods, as applicable. Understands the use of a ‘hard stop’ – holding the progress of a case to facilitate resolution of an issue to facilitate optimal patient care
  • Cleans and/or maintains instrumentation, work benches and spaces, archived materials, and other relevant products
  • Use of blood borne pathogen safety methods and personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Has a strong working knowledge of basic computing programs (PC) as well as the lab information system (LIS) to manage workflow, document issues, look up cases and other routine inquiries. Able to follow a procedure to accession and perform other less frequent tasks on a PC and LIS
  • With appropriate credentials, may be trained and scheduled to perform gross dissection for pathology specimens. Separate credentialing and training will be added at the commencement of this additional task
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Strong preference given to Associates or Bachelors degree in a related science filed, or successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program or Associates, Bachelors, or accrued credits of 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university, with a combination of 24 hours equally divided between biology and chemistry
  • Valid registration as Histotechnician HT or HTL required, preference give to HT or HTL certification of QIHC
  • 1-5 years of prior experience
