Description

Haven Behavioral Hospital of Philadelphia provides inpatient psychiatric stabilization and treatment to adults and older adults experiencing acute symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood swings or psychosis. Services are provided by psychiatrists, nurses, therapists and other professional staff who are dedicated to improving the quality of life of our patients.

Position Summary: A Patient Financial Counselor offers financial advice and assistance to patients regarding medical bills. They act as a liaison between patients and insurance companies, coordinate payments, and answer questions from both parties. They also educate patients about payment options and financial assistance.

Job Duties:

  1. Review daily inpatient and outpatient admissions that are private pay.
  2. Work with a minimum of 20 accounts per day, making at least 20 phone contacts to assist patients with financial options.
  3. Assist in registering or admitting patients when needed.
  4. Financially clear patients at intake or outpatient registration to obtain cash payment or determine eligibility for governmental programs.
  5. Conduct interviews with patients and/or family members; educate about payment options and financial assistance.
  6. Work closely with Case Management on patient status changes, insurance notifications, and coverage.
  7. Maintain complete documentation of activities performed on each account.
  8. Participate in data gathering for financial reporting.
  9. Notify hospital case management, social services, and admission staff of screening outcomes.
  10. Calculate and collect cash payments appropriately.
  11. Advise self-pay patients of community care options for follow-up.
  12. Set up payment arrangements or installment plans within collection policy guidelines.
  13. Explain hospital regulations, such as visiting hours, account payments, and charges.

Qualifications:

Education: HS Diploma or Equivalent; Bachelor’s Degree in a related field preferred.

Experience: Six months of hospital registration, billing, collections, financial counseling, or customer service experience preferred; knowledge of medical insurances (Medicare, HMOs, PPOs), EMTALA regulations, and hospital billing processes.
