CUPP 5 South is an Orthopedic/Surgical floor that is rapidly growing and is a vital part of PPMC. The floor receives post-operative surgical patients, including General, Orthopedic, Abdominal & Bariatric, Total Joint Replacement, Spinal, Neurosurgery, Trauma, GYN, Oral, Vascular, Urological, Podiatry, Colorectal, ENT, and trauma and neuro overflow.

Summary:

  • The certified nursing assistant (CNA) is an essential member of the healthcare team, delivering quality care through collaboration and communication. They work under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) to support and assist in providing care to patients and families. Responsibilities include collecting and reporting patient data, maintaining high standards of care, and ensuring accountability for their performance outcomes while supporting PPMC's Standards of Excellence. Demonstrates Penn Medicine Behavioral Competencies in all interactions.

Responsibilities:

  • Report: Receive shift report from RN; provide report at shift end, including any abnormalities.
  • Assist in Assessment: Verify patient identity, collect vital signs, and communicate changes to RN.
  • Participate in respectful communication with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Provide patient and family information for care coordination and discharge planning.
  • Observe skin changes and report issues.
  • Planning: Assist in setting patient goals and integrate RN’s care plans.
  • Intervention: Promote infection control, maintain a safe environment, monitor patient responses, and assist with activities of daily living.
  • Participate in rounds, staff meetings, and collaborate with the healthcare team.
  • Report findings impacting patient care to RN.
  • Assist with patient care activities including bathing, grooming, feeding, mobility, and hygiene.
  • Participate in skin breakdown prevention, heat/cold therapy, and dietary needs.
  • Assist with elimination needs, colostomy and vaginal irrigations, and apply urosheath/condom catheters.
  • Assist with oxygen therapy and encourage pulmonary exercises.
  • Use appropriate lifting equipment and reinforce health education.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • CPR certification from American Heart Association (AHA) (Required)
  • Certified Nurse Aid (Required)
  • Must be certified by the state of Pennsylvania as a CNA or a student nurse in an accredited ASN program with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • In lieu of certification, must be a nursing student in an accredited ASN program with a minimum 3.0 GPA, actively enrolled, and maintaining academic standards. Nursing students employed as CNAs must report any GPA or enrollment issues within 24 hours, or face termination.
