Job summary

Avera at Home Yankton is seeking a Chaplain to join a multidisciplinary team delivering compassionate spiritual care. You will assess spiritual needs, communicate with the care team, and provide chaplaincy services to patients, families and staff in accordance with Christian, patient-centered care.

Responsibilities include planning and delivering pastoral care, leading spiritual groups, and coordinating with Catholic chaplains and community clergy.

Qualifications

• High School or GED equivalent is required.
• Bachelor’s in Theology, Religious Studies or related field is preferred.
• Association of Professional Chaplains (Board Certified Chaplain) – Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc. Upon Hire.
• Clinical Pastoral Education – 1 Unit – APCE; upon hire.
• Driver’s License – Licensing Board Upon Hire.
• Good standing in the church/denomination via ecclesiastical endorsement.
• 1–3 years of pastoral experience.
• Knowledge and appreciation of Catholic ER Directives.

Responsibilities

• Work with patients/families to understand implications of medical treatment within their spiritual beliefs and support the interdisciplina ry team.
• Available to consult and debrief with Avera departments and staff during unsett ling events.
• Plan, facilitate, coordinate and deliver pastoral and spiritual care to patients, families and staff when consulted or referred.
• Gather and evaluate data relevant to the patient’s spiritual needs and assist in care planning.
• Assist patients/families/staff in crisis, bereavement and end‑of‑life decisions.
• Provide encouragement and support to empower patients to draw on spiritual strengths for healing.
• Lead spirituality groups and ecumenical services in meetings and other gatherings.
• Serve as liaison to Catholic Chaplains and community clergy for sacramental needs.
• Document spiritual goals in the electronic medical record for care coordination.

Education

High School or GED Equivalent

Bachelor’s in Theology, Religious Studies or related field

Association of Professional Chaplains – Board Certified Chaplain

Clinical Pastoral Education – 1 Unit

Driver’s License – Licensing Board

Good standing in the church, denomination and/or religious order through ecclesiastical endorsement

1‑3 years of pastoral experience

Knowledge and appreciation of Catholic Ethical and Religious Directives
