Job summary

Jackson Health System's Miami-Dade Corrections Health Services seeks an experienced Licensed Practical Nurse to perform advanced practical nursing in correctional settings. You will assess patients, administer medications under supervision, and document treatments, collaborating with physicians and RN staff to deliver quality care.

The role requires 1–3 years of LPN experience, graduation from an accredited LPN program, strong communication and organizational skills, and current BLS

Qualifications

  • Proficient with job-appropriate technology and software.
  • Maintain required unit-specific skills, certifications and licensure.
  • BLS certification required at hire with ongoing maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews patient about current problems, medications, and allergies and reviews medical record for pertinent information.
  • Keeps patients informed of their medical condition and the course of treatment prescribed by an MD.
  • Administers medications under physician/RN supervision and documents responses.
  • Establishes and documents patient treatment plans under supervision of RN/MD.
  • Performs routine immunizations, nebulizer treatments, and TB testing.
  • Assists in phlebotomy, verifies requisitions, and prepares supplies.
  • Assists in IV setup and monitors infusion as directed.
  • Maintains narcotics inventory and prepares exam rooms; supports triage and referrals.
  • Coordinates patient referrals and participates in staff orientation/training.
  • Demonstrates CARE values and adheres to unit policies and procedures.

Miami-Dade Corrections Health Services (CHS) operates under Jackson Health System (JHS) and serves approximately 5,000 patients daily. Patient care is delivered by nearly 400 healthcare employees representing a diverse multidisciplinary team of nurses & nurse support staff, physicians, psychiatrists, social workers and other professionals. CHS supports Miami Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation at 3 facilities in Miami-Dade County and leverages the resources of a large public safety net health system in the areas of education, quality, risk management & compliance.

Summary

PRM LPN performs advanced practical nursing work in the care and treatment of patients in assigned area(s). Employees in this classification perform a variety of nursing care assignments in one or more medical areas, requiring more advanced knowledge and skills of practical nursing. Emphasis of the work is on performance of specialized as well as more difficult and responsible duties in patient care, giving assistance to physicians and nurses, and performing instructional tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Interviews patient about current problems, medications, and allergies and reviews medical record for pertinent previous and current information.
  • Keeps patients informed of their medical condition and the course of treatment being prescribed by an MD.
  • Participates in patient treatment regimen, including administering medications (under the supervision of a physician and registered nurse).
  • Establishes and documents patient treatment regimen under supervision of RN or MD and implements treatment as directed.
  • Performs routine immunizations, nebulizer treatments, and visual acuity testing, and administers and reads TB tests.
  • Assists in phlebotomy identifies patient, checks requisition form for requested tests, and prepares equipment, patient and puncture site.
  • Assists in IV set-up: verifying solution to be administered, evaluating infusion site, checking IV function and patient comfort, and discontinuing IV at appropriate time, as ordered by MD and under supervision of an RN.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of narcotics after each tour of duty, examination room supplies and prepares exam rooms at the beginning and end of day and between each patient contact.
  • Performs variety of office responsibilities: answers phones and takes messages and performs triage within scope of licensed practical nursing practice in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Facilitates and assists in the coordination of patient referrals.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Demonstrates commitment to service excellence by consistently adjusting work pace when needed in order to maintain or improve patient care outcomes.
  • Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency checklist. Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
  • Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
Experience

Generally, requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

Graduation from an accredited LPN program is required.

Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.

Credentials

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
