Position Summary: Provides leadership, instruction, and motivation for participants in swimming lessons. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement, youth development, and healthy living in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  1. Know and understand all emergency procedures; respond immediately and appropriately to emergency situations according to YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.
  2. Maintain all required certifications as per YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.
  3. Conduct swim lessons for one to two participants, coordinating with parents for scheduling.
  4. Develop swimming and water safety skills using effective organizational patterns, observation, instructional floatation devices, and teaching techniques, adjusting for each participant’s developmental needs.
  5. Create a positive student experience through effective feedback, celebrating success, and encouraging progress.
  6. Foster a positive parent experience by interacting before and after lessons, providing constructive feedback, and addressing concerns; communicate with aquatics leadership.
  7. Maintain accurate records of attendance and progress as required.
  8. Perform daily equipment checks, report damages, prepare equipment before class, and organize after use.
  9. Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required.
  10. May conduct stroke development clinics or other aquatics programs as needed.
  11. Report suspicious behaviors and policy violations.
  12. Follow mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
  13. Meet deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance, e.g., Kronos Workforce Ready for timesheet approval.

Qualifications:

  • Obtain YMCA Swim Instructor Certification prior to first shift; include CPR, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, Child Abuse Prevention, and other relevant training.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups.

Language Skills: Ability to interpret and teach safety rules, write reports, and communicate effectively with groups and individuals.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations.

Reasoning Ability: Apply sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and follow policies and procedures.

Physical Demands: Regularly stand, walk, communicate, handle objects, and perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds; monitor aquatic environment and children safely.
