General Function:

The Swim Instructor serves members through Swim Lessons. S/he builds relationships with members and program participants through effective and positive customer service while providing a safe instructional environment. This job is fully on-site, not remote.

Essential Duties:

1. Private Swim Instruction:

• Maintains a safe, instructional, and supportive environment.
• Teaches students the principles of correct stroke, water safety, and swimming endurance.
• Teaches group classes to preschool and school-aged children.
• Develops appropriate introduction to a variety of water sports/activities.

General:

• Engages all members/participants in a professional and courteous manner.
• Greets and says hello and goodbye to all participants in the aquatics area and learns members' names and calls them by their names.
• Listens and is accessible to all members for questions and comments.
• Follows up as needed.
• Engages members on new classes, new changes, etc.
• Maintains proper functioning/cleanliness and/or reports malfunctioning of water area/equipment to supervisor.
• Redirects members on cell phones to front lobby.
• Adheres to and incorporates the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and educates members about the YMCA mission and goals.
• Complies with all Somerset Hills YMCA Policies and Procedures.
• Attends trainings, seminars, and meetings as required.

Other Duties:

• Arrives to work five (5) minutes before shift starts.
• Wears appropriate and professional uniform/attire.
• All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Education/Certifications:

• YSL and/or WSI certification (obtain upon hire).
• CPR/AED and First Aid (obtain upon hire).
• Current Bloodborne Pathogens certification (obtain upon hire).
• SH YMCA Child Abuse Prevention Training within 30 days of hire.
• SH YMCA New Staff Orientation Training within 90 days of hire.
