Description
As a Private Swim Instructor at the YMCA, you will be responsible for teaching and guiding individuals of all ages and skill levels in swimming techniques and water safety. You will lead private and semi-private lessons, following the provided lesson plans, while creating a positive and encouraging environment for all participants. Your role will include assessing swimmers' progress, providing constructive feedback, and ensuring that all participants practice water safety. You will also maintain a clean, safe, and supportive atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide swim instruction to individuals of various ages and skill levels, ensuring that each participant is taught techniques in a progressive, safe, and encouraging manner.
- Teach participants about water safety, including proper swimming techniques, breathing, and survival skills. Ensure all students are aware of safe practices in and around water.
- Continuously evaluate participants’ skills and progress throughout the course. Provide constructive feedback and make recommendations for further improvement.
- Foster a supportive, inclusive, and enjoyable atmosphere in the pool, encouraging students to feel comfortable and confident while learning.
- Always supervise participants to ensure their safety during lessons. Be prepared to respond to any emergencies or concerns quickly and appropriately.
- Maintain open communication with parents (for younger participants) and adult swimmers regarding progress, lesson expectations, and any concerns. Offer recommendations for continued practice and improvement.
- Maintain records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, redemptions, etc.). Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Attend regular Aquatics team meetings and training sessions to stay current on swimming education and best practices.
Requirements
- Minimum age of 15.
- Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR/PR, AED, and First Aid.
- Certifications preferred: WSI or YMCA Swim Instructor.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in swim strokes: Freestyle/front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke.
- Ability to recognize swimmers who may need assistance and hazardous situations.
- Ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water.
- Patience and effective communication skills with all ages and levels.
- Dedicated to member safety and YMCA’s mission and philosophy.
- Availability to work some weekends and at least 10 hours per week.
Physical Demands
- Remain in the pool area at all times.
- Remain alert, with no lapses of consciousness, in warm environments (80+ degrees).
- Recognize distress signals and support body weight in water.
- Support in water ranging from 80-90 degrees for 1-4 hours.
- Verbal communication, including projecting voice over distance.
