Location: New York City or Chicago
Who we are
Hum Capital is an AI-powered direct lender for the lower middle market focused on small and mid-sized businesses. Our mission is to deliver strong risk-adjusted returns for investors while building durable relationships with borrowers.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting and analysis
- Prepare concise executive summaries and term sheet comparisons for IC and senior management.
- Present a clear credit thesis: business model, sources of repayment, key risks, mitigants and recommended structure.
- Analyze historical and projected financial statements, cash flow, liquidity, leverage and debt service capacity.
- Build and stress-test downside cases; size facilities against cash flow and collateral coverage.
- Lead diligence workstreams: management calls, quality of earnings, customer concentration, collateral and field exams.
- Use Hum's proprietary data and AI underwriting tools to validate borrower performance and accelerate analysis.
Structuring and documentation
- Recommend pricing, amortization, covenants, reporting requirements and collateral package.
- Review term sheets and loan documents for consistency with the approved credit; flag deviations before close.
- Coordinate with internal counsel, origination and operations through closing.
- Maintain covenant compliance analyses and risk rating for existing borrowers.
- Identify early warning signs; maintain a watch list of problem credits including workout and recovery recommendations.
Leadership
- Review and edit the work of analysts and associates and coach junior team members on credit writing.
- Act as an independent challenge on underwriting assumptions within the deal team.
Qualifications
Required
- 5 – 10 years of credit underwriting experience in private credit, direct lending, commercial banking or specialty finance.
- Demonstrated record of authoring credit approval memos presented to an investment or credit committee.
- Strong financial statement, cash flow and covenant analysis skills; advanced Excel modeling.
- Working knowledge of senior secured loan documentation: credit agreements, security agreements, guaranties and intercreditor terms.
- Problem credit recognition and experience with amendments, forbearances or workouts.
- Exceptional written communication
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics or a related field.
Preferred
- Formal bank credit training (e.g., Citi, JPMorgan, Wells Fargo or a comparable program).
- Lower middle market or SMB lending experience, including asset-based or cash flow facilities of $1–25 million.
- MBA, CFA or progress toward either.
- Comfort using data platforms and AI tools in the underwriting workflow.
- The expected base salary range for this position is 175,000 – 225,000, plus performance-based incentive compensation.
- Direct exposure to the Investment Committee and senior leadership.
- Collaborative, entrepreneurial environment at a growing private credit platform.
- Comprehensive benefits, including fully funded medical coverage.
The base range reflects New York City and Chicago pay transparency requirements; final compensation depends on experience and qualifications.
