About the Role

As Senior Privacy Counsel, you’ll play a pivotal role in the expansion of Instacart’s global privacy program and shaping the future of responsible innovation. You will work at the forefront of emerging technologies like AI, driving privacy compliance and data strategy. You will support and advise cross-functional teams, including our product, advertising, marketing, health, policy, engineering and communications teams. Your scope will extend to our international privacy programs and cross-border initiatives. You’ll also partner closely with our information security team. You will report to the Associate General Counsel for Privacy.

About the Job

  • Global Privacy Leadership. Advise on global privacy regulatory and industry developments, assessing impact on and ensuring alignment with Instacart’s global objectives.
  • Drive privacy compliance and awareness across Instacart, including in product development, engineering, advertising, marketing, data science, HR, business development & sales, security and the global policy team.
  • Incident Management. Lead privacy and data security event response teams.
  • Innovation Leader. Serve as privacy subject matter expert for Instacart’s key initiatives, including artificial intelligence, personalization, advertising, Instacart Health and smart carts.
  • Strategic Program Management. Drive privacy initiatives and governance programs to scale across the organization, working in partnership with our privacy engineering and risks teams on the maturation and operationalization of Instacart’s privacy program operations.
  • Partner with legal team colleagues on commercial transactions and M&A activity;
  • Think ahead, see around corners, and help to prepare for legal issues that may arise in the future.
About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • A J.D. from a top-tier law school and membership with at least one state bar
  • A minimum of 6 years of related experience working at a leading law firm or in-house legal department, with a minimum of 4 years of hands on privacy experience (in-house experience, especially at a tech company, CPG or retailer, is a plus)
  • Expertise in global privacy frameworks, including GDPR and HIPAA.
  • Experience with cybersecurity programs.
  • Experience in AdTech
  • The ability to provide clear, concise legal advice, work effectively cross-functionally to drive to results, particularly with engineering, product and marketing teams
  • Strong program management skills and experience building scalable processes
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to translate legal concepts into into practical guidance
  • A team player!

  • Preferably California state bar
