Qualifications

About the role

Anthropic is seeking a Privacy Counsel to join our Legal team. You'll counsel on complex privacy issues and build the processes and programs that address privacy and data protection in a global context. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and growing team, where you will have the chance to shape the company’s privacy and data protection strategy and compliance program.

You will work at the intersection of novel legal questions, fast-moving product development, and a high-profile regulatory environment, partnering cross-functionally with Legal, Integrity & Compliance, Safeguards, Security, Policy, Research and Product.

Key responsibilities

• Counsel product, research and engineering teams across the model and product lifecycles, applying laws written before frontier AI with clarity and fresh thinking
• Translate complex technical architecture into clear, actionable risk advice
• Deliver integrated guidance on safety, security and data protection
• Lead privacy on Anthropic’s most strategic deals and partnerships, opening creative paths for novel technologies
• Negotiate privacy and data protection terms in enterprise, platform and partnership commercial agreements, including DPAs, BAAs, data sharing agreements and cross-border transfer terms
• Lead privacy diligence on mergers and acquisitions, and support corporate governance
• Collaborate closely with counsel and privacy colleagues on joint analysis, bringing competing views together into a single, well-reasoned position

Minimum qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar
• Hands-on experience advising a technology business (in-house or at a leading law firm) on privacy and data protection
• Experience drafting and negotiating data protection agreements, such as DPAs, BAAs and data sharing agreements
• Working knowledge of key global privacy laws, including those of the Americas, EEA and APAC
• Ability to read and engage with technical documentation, such as system designs and architecture diagrams
• Excellent legal writing, including clear, concise advice

Preferred qualifications

• At least 8 years of privacy and data protection legal experience
• Deep familiarity with software and model development and architecture
• Proven ability to build privacy processes, playbooks and templates that scale with a fast-growing business
• Direct engagement with privacy regulators, including providing briefings and responding to inquiries
• Privacy and data protection work on mergers, acquisitions, and similar transactions
• Background advising safety, security or trust and safety teams, including on privacy incidents and notification decisions

Role-specific policy: For this role, we expect all staff to be able to work from our San Francisco or New York office at least 3 days a week, though we encourage you to apply even if you might need some flexibility for an interim period of time.

The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.

For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
