A leading global motor vehicle company is seeking an experienced privacy and compliance counsel to help the company respond to emerging laws, rules and regulations, specifically focused on the new DOJ China rule.
This is a full-time (40 hours per week) interim/contract role with an initial 6 month duration. Candidates should have prior experience with privacy, compliance (export controls, OFAC), and building compliance programs.

Pay Rate: $105 - $120 / hr

SUMMARY:
- Seeking a highly skilled and motivated Temporary Compliance Attorney for an approximately 6-month engagement to support our compliance efforts, with a specific focus on the new Department of Justice (DOJ) China Rule.
- The ideal candidate will possess significant experience in legal compliance, particularly with frameworks such as OFAC or anti-bribery laws, and will bring a strong background in technology and data systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of activities, including but not limited to:
- Develop and Implement Compliance Programs: Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of compliance programs and controls, with a particular emphasis on those related to our technology platforms, data handling practices, and obligations under the DOJ China Rule.
- Provide Expert Legal Counsel: Advise internal stakeholders, including technology, product, and business teams, on a wide array of legal and regulatory matters. This will heavily involve interpreting and applying regulations related to data privacy (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), cybersecurity, data governance, and intellectual property as they intersect with our systems and the DOJ China Rule.
- Provide Technology & Data Systems Expertise: Utilize in-depth experience with technology data systems to provide practical and actionable legal advice. This includes understanding system architecture, data flows, and international data-sharing agreements to assess compliance risks and solutions.
- Foster Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely and effectively with cross-functional teams, including IT, Security, Product Development, and Operations, to ensure legal and compliance considerations are seamlessly integrated into our business processes and product development lifecycles.
- Contract Review & Negotiation: Draft, review, and negotiate potential new compliance terms for data processing agreements (DPAs), vendor contracts, and other relevant legal documents to ensure alignment with the DOJ China Rule and other applicable regulations.
- Policy Development & Training: Develop and maintain internal policies, procedures, and guidelines related to compliance. Assist in creating and delivering training programs to educate employees on relevant legal and compliance topics, fostering a culture of compliance.
- Independent Case Management & Directed Projects: Manage an assigned caseload and projects with a high degree of autonomy, while also being prepared to undertake specific assignments and initiatives under the direction of senior legal leadership.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Compliance Acumen: Deep understanding of compliance frameworks and regulatory requirements relevant to technology and data, with the ability to interpret and apply complex regulations to practical business scenarios.
- Technology & Data Systems Proficiency: Ability to understand and discuss technical concepts related to data systems, system architecture, data flows, and data lifecycle management; capable of “speaking the language” of IT and engineering teams.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Excellent legal research, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities, with a keen ability to dissect complex issues and develop innovative solutions.
- Attention to Detail: Relentless in reviewing documents, analyzing complex situations, and identifying subtle legal and compliance issues.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the proven ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly and concisely to both legal and non-legal audiences.
- Collaboration and Teamwork: A collaborative spirit with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups and build strong working relationships to achieve common goals.
- Independent Work Ethic & Adaptability: Self-motivated and capable of managing workload and projects independently, while also being responsive and effective when working under specific direction in a dynamic environment.
- Risk Management & Prioritization: Strong ability to understand, assess, and articulate legal and business risks, and to strategically prioritize tasks in a fast-paced setting.
- Ethical Conduct: High ethical standards and unwavering professional integrity.
- Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet demanding deadlines.
EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant legal experience.
- Experience gained in-house at a technology company or at a law firm with a robust technology and compliance practice is highly preferred.
- Proven, hands-on experience in developing, implementing, and managing compliance programs, such as those related to OFAC, anti-bribery laws (e.g., FCPA), or similar regulatory frameworks.
- Demonstrable experience with, and understanding of, technology data systems, data lifecycle management, and the associated legal implications.
EDUCATION & LICENSING:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active bar admission in good standing in at least one U.S. state.
