Job summary

University Center for Pain Management in Knoxville is seeking an experienced Prior Authorization & Referral Specialist to streamline Athenahealth workflows and manage referrals. You will obtain timely prior authorizations for imaging, medications, and procedures, coordinating with clinicians and insurers to secure approvals.

You will collaborate with clinical and administrative staff, track requests, and resolve delays or denials while maintaining accurate, HIPAA-compliant documentation.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in medical prior authorizations, referrals, or insurance authorization coordination.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of Athenahealth.
• Experience obtaining authorizations for imaging and medications.
• Familiarity with insurance portals and tracking.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
• Attention to detail and accurate documentation.

Responsibilities

• Manage Athenahealth EHR for authorizations and referrals.
• Enter and track authorization data in patient charts.
• Obtain prior authorizations for MRI, CT, X-ray and medications.
• Coordinate with imaging facilities and insurers.
• Handle denials and appeals.
• Monitor queues and follow up on pending requests.
• Ensure HIPAA-compliant documentation.
