Remote: This role is categorized as remote. This means the successful candidate may be based anywhere in the United States and is not expected to report to a GM worksite unless directed by their manager.

The Role

The AV Safety Strategy and Assessment team is seeking a technical leader with extensive experience in the full end-to-end development lifecycle for artificial intelligence & machine learning. As the AI Safety Principal Engineer, you will need to stay current on industry best practices and standards and guide the development of GM's AI safety strategy. This technical leader role requires extensive programming and statistical techniques to solve complex problems, provide safety guidance to the engineering teams focused on AI/ML, and assess their work products.

As the AI/ML Safety Technical Lead, you will work with partners and customers to define safety strategies and targets for AI/ML-based autonomous driving systems, understand their challenges and needs, collaborate on new machine learning solutions, assess the safety of existing production models and ML Ops in a cloud environment, collaborate on proof of concepts for new generative AI solutions, and provide safety expertise and guidance to a team of AI/ML developers.

What You'll Do

  1. Train new machine learning models to solve complex business problems.
  2. Enhance existing machine learning models to increase performance and adapt to changing business needs.
  3. Prototype new AI solutions, including Generative AI, to address business challenges.
  4. Provide guidance on business problems using statistical methods and craft ad-hoc reports to share findings and recommendations with business partners.
  5. Build statistical models to depict company-wide trends.
  6. Perform testing and validation of data sets.
  7. Determine the meaning of data and explain how teams and leaders can leverage it to improve processes.
  8. Maintain structured documentation and data, utilizing a large toolset of statistical methodologies to solve business problems.

Your Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • 10 years of experience in machine learning, engineering, data science, or a related field
  • Extensive experience in:
  • Programming & Frameworks: Python, R, Java, PySpark, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, LangChain, SQL
  • Machine Learning & AI: LLMs, Generative AI, RAG, Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning, NLP, SVM, XGBoost, Random Forest, Decision Trees, Clustering
  • Data Engineering: Databricks, Hadoop, SQL, Data Pipelines, Data Preprocessing & Feature Engineering
  • Cloud & Big Data Platforms: Preferred: Microsoft Azure (Data Lake, ML, Databricks); Nice to Have: AWS (S3, SageMaker, Bedrock), Google Cloud (BigQuery, Dataflow, AI Platform)
  • Deployment & MLOps: MLflow, Model Monitoring & Versioning, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub, Jira
  • Data Analysis & Visualization: Tableau, PowerBI, Pandas, NumPy

Proven track record in providing technical leadership in AI/ML, excellent communication and collaboration skills, strong problem-solving mindset, and proactive attitude are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in relevant fields
  • Extensive NLP solutions from problem statement to deployment and optimization
  • Expertise with LLM solutions delivering business value
  • Experience with deploying generative AI solutions in production
  • Leadership experience in data science teams

Compensation

  • Base salary: $193,600 - $296,600 USD annually
  • Range varies based on factors
  • Bonus potential based on performance
