A well-established electric utility is seeking a senior-level Transmission Planning Engineer to provide technical leadership on bulk power system planning initiatives. This individual will lead complex transmission studies, evaluate long-term system needs, and develop recommendations supporting grid reliability, resiliency, and the integration of emerging technologies.
This role offers the opportunity to influence major infrastructure investments and serve as a subject matter expert on transmission system performance, planning methodologies, and future grid modernization efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead advanced transmission planning studies under a variety of existing and future system conditions.
- Perform and review power system analyses, including:
- Power flow studies
- Thermal assessments
- Voltage performance evaluations
- Transfer capability analyses
- Stability assessments
- Electromagnetic transient studies
- Develop technical recommendations for transmission system upgrades and infrastructure investments.
- Evaluate the impacts of renewable generation, energy storage, inverter-based resources, electrification, and other emerging technologies on the power grid.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, asset management, and project development teams to identify and address long-range system needs.
- Critically assess assumptions, methodologies, and study results to ensure sound engineering conclusions.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and supporting documentation for leadership and regulatory stakeholders.
- Provide technical leadership on complex multidisciplinary projects and planning initiatives.
- Represent the organization in industry working groups and technical forums as required.
- Support long-range planning strategies focused on reliability, capacity growth, and evolving grid technologies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related technical discipline.
- Approximately 8+ years of experience in transmission system planning, power system studies, or related utility planning functions.
- Strong understanding of bulk electric system planning principles and transmission reliability concepts.
- Extensive experience with power system modeling and simulation tools.
- Demonstrated experience evaluating transmission performance under a variety of operating and contingency conditions.
- Knowledge of transmission planning criteria, reliability standards, and applicable industry practices.
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to serve as a technical leader on highly complex engineering assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Ph.D. in Engineering or related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience with HVDC systems, FACTS technologies, inverter-based resources, and renewable integration studies.
- Experience analyzing weak-grid conditions and advanced dynamic system behavior.
- Programming or automation experience using tools such as Python or VBA.
Software Experience
Preferred experience with power system analysis and simulation platforms such as:
- PSCAD
- ASPEN OneLiner
- EMTP/ATP
- Other transmission planning and transient simulation tools
