We are seeking an experienced Principal Transmission Line Project Engineer to manage the design and engineering of multiple high-voltage transmission projects. The portfolio includes renewable-generation tie lines supporting wind, solar, and battery energy storage facilities, as well as stand-alone transmission projects.
This is an owner-side project engineering role focused specifically on transmission lines. External engineering consultants perform design work under the direction of the selected engineer. Separate teams manage substations, power-system studies, and protection and controls.
Responsibilities
- Manage transmission-line design from early-stage development through construction, commissioning, and closeout.
- Work with project-development teams to define technical requirements, scope, design criteria, schedules, risks, and cost assumptions.
- Develop scopes of work, solicit and evaluate engineering proposals, and oversee selected consultants and contractors.
- Coordinate routing, permitting, survey, geotechnical, LiDAR, environmental, land, and other engineering inputs required to design and construct transmission lines.
- Manage engineering deliverables for competitive proposals, procurement, construction, and project turnover.
- Review Issued for Bid, Issued for Procurement, Issued for Construction, and as-built drawing packages.
- Coordinate with development, construction, procurement, estimating, permitting, land, and project-management stakeholders.
- Monitor engineering progress, identify technical and schedule risks, and lead mitigation efforts.
- Provide value engineering and ensure designs meet project requirements, applicable standards, constructability expectations, and quality objectives.
- Present project status, risks, technical issues, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders and leadership.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering.
- At least seven years of direct experience developing, designing, engineering, or constructing high-voltage transmission-line projects.
- Strong knowledge of overhead transmission-line design and common engineering deliverables.
- Ability to interpret one-line and three-line diagrams, general arrangements, plan-and-profile drawings, design criteria, and construction packages.
- Experience directing engineering consultants and coordinating multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong project-management, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel throughout North America as project needs require.
Preferred Qualifications
- Owner-side project engineering or project-management experience.
- Professional Engineer license or PMP certification.
- Experience supporting renewable-generation interconnection or generation-tie projects.
- Proficiency with PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, Primavera P6, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience with competitive transmission proposals, consultant procurement, value engineering, construction support, and commissioning.
The successful candidate will combine strong transmission-line technical knowledge with the leadership and project-management skills needed to guide consultants, resolve design issues, manage risk, and move complex infrastructure projects from concept through execution.
