Job Title: Transmission Line Engineer

Job Description

This role sits within the transmission department and focuses on the engineering and design of high-voltage transmission lines that support utility customers. The Transmission Line Engineer collaborates closely with SR engineers, in-house teams, and client engineers and designers to deliver complete project solutions from concept through construction. The position involves technical design work, project coordination, and occasional site visits to ensure safe and compliant execution of transmission projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering and design activities for transmission line projects, including engineering analysis, route selection, material acquisition, structural and foundation design, and project and construction management.
  • Prepare comprehensive project construction documents, such as plan and profile drawings, detailed design drawings, engineering and material specifications, construction specifications, project schedules, and bills of material.
  • Develop project design alternatives and prepare corresponding cost estimates to support decision-making and project planning.
  • Design new transmission facilities with voltages ranging from 12 kV to 765 kV, ensuring designs meet technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Utilize PLS-CADD to model and analyze transmission line design projects, ensuring accurate and efficient design solutions.
  • Conduct contractor bid and construction meetings and help ensure that work activities are performed safely, in accordance with project plans, established schedules, internal policies, rules, standards, and applicable external regulations.
  • Coordinate effectively with governmental and regulatory agencies and contractors to secure necessary project permits and approvals.
  • Provide leadership within project teams to facilitate timely project completion, mentor and train other engineers, and support the development of measurable goals and objectives for the work area.
  • Function as a project lead for transmission projects, overseeing design activities and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project milestones.
  • Coordinate work activities of other team members within the work group and department to complete transmission projects efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide training, guidance, and technical support to lower-level employees to build team capability and ensure consistent design quality.
  • Initiate corrective actions when substation-related project objectives or milestones are not being met, and support problem resolution to keep projects on track.
  • Work under the supervision of higher-level engineers while progressively taking on more responsibility as experience grows.
  • Complete occasional site visits to observe field conditions, support construction activities, and verify that designs are implemented correctly.

Essential Skills

  • Two to five years of experience in utilities working with transmission line design.
  • Two to five years of experience completing engineering projects from start to finish, including planning, design, and implementation.
  • Two to five years of experience scoping, estimating, and ordering materials for transmission line projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering; an ABET-accredited degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering may count toward years of experience.
  • Proficiency in transmission line design principles and practices, including high-voltage applications.
  • Hands-on experience using PLS-CADD for modeling and designing transmission line projects.
  • Experience with design engineering in a transmission or civil engineering context.
  • Ability to prepare detailed engineering documents, drawings, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Strong coordination and communication skills to work effectively with internal teams, client engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Capability to lead aspects of projects and guide less experienced team members while working under the direction of SR engineers.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • EIT (Engineer in Training) license is desirable but not required.
  • Experience using AutoCAD or similar design tools in support of transmission line or civil engineering projects.
  • Background in civil engineering or structural design related to transmission structures and foundations.
