Job Overview

Principal Structures Engineer – Landing Systems Wheel and Brake Structures Team, Troy, OH. The role involves designing, analyzing, and testing aircraft wheels and brakes for advanced aircraft, collaborating with engineering, project, sustaining, customer support, and manufacturing teams.

What You Will Do
  • Lead structural engineering projects for aircraft wheel and brake development and repairs, including design trade studies, FEA analyses, testing, validation, and resolving operational issues.
  • Perform strength, fatigue, and fracture analyses using classical methods and FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, LS-DYNA), including defining FEA model requirements, conducting analyses, and preparing detailed reports.
  • Develop instrumentation and test plans for strain‑gage or related testing, analyze test data, and support product validation and qualification efforts.
  • Create detailed engineering reports, share findings with internal stakeholders, and present design reviews to external customers as required.
  • Lead method development projects focused on enhancing engineering processes and reducing new product introduction (NPI) cycle time.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams during product development, validation, and qualification processes while prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and ensuring clear communication in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Mentor junior and new engineers in learning and developing structural engineering skills.
  • Travel up to 5% domestically and internationally as needed.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Experience with strain‑gage testing and lift analysis.
  • Experience with FEA software and with 2D/3D modeling software.
  • Experience writing technical reports.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Leading structural engineering projects for NPI in aerospace or a similar industry.
  • Superior project management skills and the ability to handle multiple assignments with varying complexity.
  • Experience with aerospace structures and/or components.
  • Proficiency in ANSYS or equivalent software and working knowledge of NX or equivalent modeling software.
  • Experience with structural testing using strain gauges.
  • Good understanding of aerospace materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
