Job summary

Collins Aerospace seeks a Senior Structural Engineer in Foley, AL to provide technical support across design, build and delivery of complex metallic and composite aircraft components. You will apply static, fatigue and fracture analyses while promoting cost reduction and efficiency improvements.

The role offers exposure to multiple aircraft programs, requires travel up to 10%, and requires a strong background in structural analysis and AI-assisted engineering tools is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Requires STEM degree and 5+ years of relevant experience or an advanced degree with 3+ years of experience.
  • Experience performing static stress and fatigue analysis using classical methods and FEA.
  • Experience with metallic or advanced composite aerospace structures.
  • Experience using Nastran, Patran, or comparable FEA tools.
  • Experience with load paths, free body diagrams, load balance, structural sizing, and aerospace failure modes.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex structural analyses using hand and computer methods (static, fatigue, fracture).
  • Define and document repair designs for metallic, bonded metallic, and composite structures.
  • Collaborate with MRB to develop standard repair instructions.
  • Prepare engineering reports for repairs and FAA approval as needed.

Collins Aerospace is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to provide technical support to the product design, build, and delivery processes for complex, integrated aircraft components of metallic and advanced composite construction. This role will drive meaningful improvements across Engineering Production Support processes by applying a strong understanding of product design, performing detailed structural analyses, and promoting continuous improvement in engineering efficiency, product producibility, quality, and cost reduction.

This position offers exposure to multiple aircraft programs and the opportunity to solve challenging technical problems while improving Engineering Production Support processes. The candidate will combine strong structural analysis capabilities with sound engineering judgment, effective communication, and a continuous improvement mindset.

What You Will Do
  • Perform complex structural analyses using hand and computer calculations, including static, fatigue and fracture analysis of aerospace components.
  • Define, assess, and document repair designs for metallic, bonded metallic, and advanced composite aerospace structures.
  • Work with Materials Review Board (MRB) to develop standard repair instructions.
  • Analyze repair proposals and prepare formal engineering reports supporting minor and major repairs for customers and FAA approval, which may include obtaining authorized engineering signatures.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering teams to identify and implement cost reduction opportunities across product lines and processes.
  • Support corrective action and defect reduction initiatives by identifying recurring technical issues and contributing to sustainable solutions.
  • Develop and implement processes, methods, and tools that improve efficiency throughout Engineering Production Support workflows activities.
  • Review technical documentation and analyses prepared by other engineers and provide constructive technical feedback.
  • Develop or improve engineering methods, tools, databases, and automated workflows that increase efficiency.
  • Apply CORE tools and continuous improvement principles to reduce process turnbacks, improve engineering performance, and support the objectives of the organization.
  • Communicate technical findings, recommendations, risks, and decisions clearly to engineering leadership, customers, and cross functional stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% as needed.
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience.
  • Experience performing static stress and fatigue analysis using classical methods and finite element analysis.
  • Experience analyzing metallic or advanced composite aerospace structures.
  • Experience using Nastran, Patran, or comparable finite element analysis tools.
  • Experience with load paths, free body diagrams, load balance, structural sizing, and common aerospace failure modes.
  • Experience independently developing analysis approaches and solve technical problems of increasing complexity.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook.
Qualifications You Prefer
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, leadership, and customer organizations.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and well-organized technical reports.
  • Proficiency in programming and automation tools such as Python, Excel VBA, VB.NET, C#.NET, Visual Basic, or similar languages for developing internal engineering tools, automating repetitive tasks, and improving workflow efficiency.
  • Knowledge or practical experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Generative AI, or AI-assisted engineering tools is an advantage, particularly in applying AI to engineering design, analysis, documentation, or process optimization.
  • Experience working effectively across functional boundaries and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic production support environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to address issues of complex scope.
  • Proactive, action-oriented approach to managing tasks and activities.
  • Airframe/aerospace design and stress experience.
  • Experience using MSC Nastran and Patran for FEA.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
