Principal SRE Engineer: Observability & Cloud Strategy

Job summary

Jobtailor seeks a senior engineering leader to advise on observability, cloud, and data governance for enterprise needs, translating business objectives into scalable technical solutions and guiding leadership on risk, controls, and platform health.

You will partner with engineering, product, and vendor teams to maintain a stable ecosystem, drive automation, and improve monitoring practices while ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of work experience, training, military experience, or education
• 5+ years designing and implementing observability solutions, such as Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry
• 3+ years of experience with cloud and container platforms, including Kubernetes and OpenShift
• Experience with databases including Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB and strong SQL skills
• Familiarity with Java-based applications and performance monitoring, including JVM metrics and heap/thread analysis
• Knowledge of data governance and compliance frameworks
• Experience troubleshooting OS-level and infrastructure-related issues
• Experience supporting commercial off-the-shelf and custom-built applications
• Experience working in Agile or Kanban environments

Responsibilities

• Advise leadership on applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, and web technologies for complex business and technical needs
• Lead strategy and resolution of highly complex enterprise challenges
• Translate advanced technology experience and business objectives into technical engineering solutions
• Provide vision, direction, and expertise to leadership on innovative business solutions
• Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and recommend innovations that enhance operations or provide competitive advantage
• Serve as an expert advisor to leadership across the enterprise
• Maintain visibility into risks, controls, and platform health
• Ensure observability coverage supports risk management and compliance requirements
• Partner with engineering, product, and vendor teams to maintain a stable and scalable ecosystem
• Drive continuous improvement in monitoring, automation, and operational practices
