Job summary

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Principal / Sr. Principal Software Engineer to work on the Whisper program in Stafford, Virginia. You will perform software development and maintenance, supporting requirements, design, coding and testing across distributed systems worldwide.

On-site in Stafford, you’ll collaborate with teams to meet rigorous security and performance standards, leveraging Java, C, Bash and Python, with a focus on scalable, compliant solutions for a high-demand defense environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience or higher; on-site in Stafford, VA.
• Strong programming skills in Java, C, Bash, Python; familiarity with Windows and RHEL.
• Active TS/SCI clearance and eligibility for a CI polygraph; IAT Level II or higher preferred.
• Experience with security/compliance tools (Nessus, HBSS, ACAS) and RMF knowledge.

Responsibilities

Northrop Grumman, Defense Systems, is seeking a Principal / Sr. Principal Software Engineer to work on the Whisper programs in Stafford, Virginia. The Whisper program is a large antibody‑based RF transmission and receiving network platform. We use command and control software to remotely control multiple systems worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Perform software development and maintenance.
• Assist with all or part of the following: requirements, application design, code development, testing, and code maintenance.

Basic Qualifications

• Open as a dual level opportunity: Level 3 or Level 4. Level 3 – Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience, or a master’s and 3 years’ experience, or a high school diploma/equivalent with 9 years’ experience.
• Level 4 – Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of experience, or a master’s and 6 years’ experience, or a high school diploma/equivalent with 12 years’ experience.
• Work on‑site at Stafford, Virginia.
• Programming experience with languages such as Java, C, Bash, Python.
• Familiar with Windows and RHEL.
• TS/SCI clearance and ability to obtain a CI polygraph.
• Prior to start obtain a (IAT) LevelII or higher (e.g., Security+).
• Familiar with compliance/vulnerability monitoring tools such as Nessus, HBSS, and ACAS.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Java Swing, multi‑threaded and distributed Java applications, Java Web application servers (Tomcat, JBoss, Wildfly).
• Relational database experience (JDBC, SQL, MySQL).
• JEE experience (JDBC, JNI, JNDI, JMS, Servlet/JSP, EJB/JPA).
• Web service experience (RESTful Web services).
• Knowledge of Hycu backup/recovery software or other backup/recovery software.
• Experience with Nutanix virtual environment or other platforms such as VMware.
• Elastic Search Stack (ELK) and web GUI front‑end development (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Angular).
• Experience hardening Linux OS and applications to required configurations (e.g., DISA STIGs).
• Configuration management experience with software version control tools (Jira’s Bamboo, Stash, Git, Subversion).
• Risk Management Framework (RMF) knowledge.
• Linux and / or Windows system administration experience.

Salary

Primary Level salary range: $114,000.00 – $171,000.00. Secondary Level salary range: $142,000.00 – $213,000.00. Compensation ranges are guidelines and may vary based on scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills, and market conditions.
