Job description

Principal Software Product Manager Description

We are looking for a seasoned Principal Software Product Manager to shape and lead the next generation of HP's consumer notebook software experiences. In this role, you will operate at both strategic altitude and execution depth defining long-term product direction while driving complex, cross-organizational initiatives from concept through launch. You will partner closely with engineering, design, commercial, platform, and executive stakeholders to deliver differentiated, customer-facing software at global scale. This role is ideal for a product leader who thrives in ambiguity, brings strong technical and business fluency, and is excited to influence how software, hardware, services, and operating system platforms come together across HP's consumer portfolio. The ideal candidate has experience working across platform software stacks and understands the unique opportunities and constraints of modern operating systems and ecosystem experiences.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and drive the end-to-end lifecycle of major software initiatives, from early discovery and framing through delivery, launch, and iteration.
  • Define and evangelize a compelling product vision that aligns customer needs, platform strategy, and HP's long-term business objectives.
  • Identify and translate emerging technologies, platforms, and business models into scalable product opportunities.
  • Lead deep market, customer, and ecosystem analysis to inform product strategy and investment decisions.
  • Partner with engineering and architecture leaders to make principled technical tradeoffs that balance velocity, quality, and long-term platform health.
  • Orchestrate execution across highly matrixed teams (engineering, UX, commercial, marketing, partnerships, legal, and operations).
  • Serve as a senior product voice in roadmap reviews, executive forums, and cross-division planning.
  • Leverage quantitative insights and qualitative feedback to continuously refine product direction and measure success.
  • Engage directly with customers, partners, and internal teams to surface insights, validate strategy, and influence outcomes.
  • Mentor and guide other product managers, helping raise the overall product bar across the organization.
  • Drive product strategy for software experiences that span operating system, platform, and application layers, balancing customer needs with long-term platform evolution.
  • Partner with platform, architecture, and engineering teams to evaluate emerging operating system capabilities, ecosystem trends, and technology investments that can create differentiated customer experiences.
  • Define requirements and roadmaps that account for cross-platform interoperability, device-to-device experiences, cloud services integration, and evolving user workflows.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering, operating systems, or a closely related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in software product management or closely related roles.
  • Demonstrated success delivering large-scale, customer-facing software products.
  • Experience operating in complex, global, cross-functional environments.
  • Experience working with modern operating system platforms, including Windows, Linux, Android, or comparable software ecosystems.
  • Must-Have Experience: Led multiple 0-to-1 and 1-to-N initiatives with clear customer and business impact.
  • Must-Have Experience: Defined and executed product strategy across platform-level or portfolio-level surfaces.
  • Must-Have Experience: Partnered deeply with engineering teams on architecture, systems design, and technical decision-making.
  • Must-Have Experience: Applied strong analytical thinking to product decisions, tradeoffs, and prioritization.
  • Must-Have Experience: Influenced senior leadership through clear storytelling, data, and structured thinking.
  • Must-Have Experience: Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, competing priorities, and organizational complexity.
  • Must-Have Experience: Proven effectiveness in resource-constrained or fast-moving environments.
  • Must-Have Experience: Experience defining products or platform capabilities that interact deeply with operating system services, platform APIs, or device ecosystems.
  • Must-Have Experience: Deep understanding of modern operating system architecture, platform services, application frameworks, security models, and software lifecycle considerations across Windows, Linux, Android, or similar environments.
  • Must-Have Experience: Experience collaborating with engineering teams responsible for platform software, operating system integrations, developer frameworks, device services, or ecosystem experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mobile software ecosystems, smartphone platforms, or connected device experiences.
  • Familiarity with Windows, Linux, and Android platform roadmaps, developer ecosystems, and application models.
