Job summary

Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration seeks a Principal Software Engineer – SW CI/CD Engr to design and maintain secure CI/CD pipelines across multiple software releases in classified environments. The role requires active Secret clearance, 8140 certification, and willingness to travel.

The engineer will collaborate with multiple ARTs, implement DevSecOps practices, and automate deployment workflows using Git, Nexus, Jenkins, Jira, and Confluence on Linux platforms.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, DevOps Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related field; 5+ years experience; or Master’s with 3+ years; or 9 years’ experience in lieu of degree.
  • Active Government-Issued 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (e.g., Security+ CE, CCNA-Security, CySA+, CND).
  • Current in-scope Government-issued Secret security clearance required to start.
  • Willingness to travel 10% of the time for business needs.
  • Experience working in classified environments to implement and support CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong communication skills to present status to stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain a standardized CI/CD pipeline for all Product Teams in RA ART.
  • Collaborate with RA ART, Cyber, and Platforms ARTs to meet security and performance requirements.
  • Integrate core DevSecOps tools to support automated build, test, and deployment in classified environments.
  • Administer Linux-based system operations and security controls for CI/CD infrastructure.
  • Develop Linux shell scripts and Ansible playbooks to automate provisioning and monitoring.
  • Manage SE Linux and Red Hat repositories for secure builds and deployments.
  • Work with system admins, IT, and security to troubleshoot and improve pipeline performance.
  • Present regular status updates on pipeline health and risks to RA leadership.
  • Support Agile development practices within RA ART and CI/CD/DevSecOps improvements.

Based in Huntsville, AL, this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels. This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.

Essential Functions
  • Design, implement, and maintain a standardized CI/CD pipeline for use by all Product Teams within the RA ART, ensuring consistency, reliability, and scalability across multiple software releases and build versions
  • Work across the RA ART and closely with the Cyber and Platforms ARTs to ensure that CI/CD tools, integrations, and configurations meet security, compliance, and performance requirements
  • Integrate and manage core DevSecOps tools (e.g., Git, Nexus, Jenkins, Jira, Confluence) to support automated build, test, integration, and deployment workflows in classified environments
  • Implement and support Linux-based system administration and system security controls required for CI/CD infrastructure, including hardening, patching, and compliance with program security requirements
  • Develop and maintain Linux shell scripts and Ansible playbooks to automate configuration, provisioning, deployment, and monitoring of CI/CD infrastructure and applications
  • Administer and manage Security-Enhanced (SE) Linux and Red Hat repositories to support secure software builds and deployments
  • Collaborate closely with system administrators, IT, and security personnel to troubleshoot issues, resolve integration challenges, and continuously improve pipeline performance and reliability
  • Present regular, clear status updates on pipeline health, tool performance, ongoing work, risks, and issue resolution to RA leadership and other stakeholders
  • Support Agile development practices within the RA ART, participating in relevant Agile ceremonies and contributing to continuous improvement of CI/CD and DevSecOps practices
Basic Qualifications
  • Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, DevOps Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 3 years of relevant work experience; or 9 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree.
  • Applicants must have a current, active Government-Issued 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (such as Security+ CE, CCNA-Security, CySA+, CND, etc.) at the time of application, which is required to start.
  • The candidate is responsible for maintaining their 8140 certifications throughout the entire contract period.
  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope Government-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start.
  • Willingness to travel 10% of the time for business needs.
  • Experience working within classified environments to implement and support CI/CD pipelines for multiple software releases and build versions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present status and technical information clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate the poise, flexibility, and initiative needed in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, especially Systems Administrators, IT, and Security Linux system administration and system security implementations.
  • Experience with all or some of the following tools: Git, Nexus, Jenkins, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Experience with CI/CD implementation and operations, particularly in a classified development environment.
  • Experience working with DevSecOps practices and tooling.
  • Experience with Linux shell scripting and Ansible playbook development and management.
  • Experience with Security-Enhanced (SE) Linux and Red Hat repository administration.
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and their application to systems and CI/CD infrastructure
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) implementation such as IPA and ADFS
  • Cloud- and virtualization-related technologies such as OpenShift, OpenStack, VMware ESXi
  • QAS/VAS, Windows, Active Directory, Backup and Recovery solutions
  • Containers and container orchestration products (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes or similar)
  • Understanding of Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) concepts and how they relate to CI/CD and DevSecOps
  • Knowledge of Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery principles and how they apply to IT infrastructure and IT products

Primary Level Salary Range

Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 - $163,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
