Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP in Durham is seeking a Principal Software Engineer (Storage). This hybrid role requires you to work from an HPE office on average 2 days per week.

You will design and implement the Kubernetes-based control plane for the Alletra storage MP X10000, building Go microservices, Kubernetes controllers and host networking daemons to manage data-center network infrastructure.

• Collaborates with cross-functional teams; mentors junior engineers.

Job Description

Job Family Definition: Designs, develops, troubleshoots and debugs the Kubernetes-based control plane software for HPE Alletra Storage MP X10000, an enterprise storage product. Develops Go microservices, Kubernetes controllers and host networking daemons that provide highly available client networking, manage data-center network infrastructure, and distribute and upgrade software across the cluster. Works across Linux networking, Kubernetes and network hardware.

Responsibilities

• Designs, develops and owns Go microservices and Kubernetes controllers/operators for cluster networking, network infrastructure management, and software distribution.
• Develops host-level Linux networking software that configures interfaces, addressing and routing to give clients highly available access over IPv4 and IPv6.
• Automates the configuration and lifecycle management of data-center network switches, including safe, recoverable firmware upgrades.
• Develops and maintains services that package, store and distribute software and container images for cluster installs and upgrades.
• Designs distributed, highly available services that remain correct through node failures, restarts and partial upgrades.
• Reviews and evaluates designs and code for correctness, failure handling and testability; provides tangible feedback to improve product quality and reduce the risk of failure.
• Develops automated unit, integration and system tests, including fault-injection testing.
• Troubleshoots customer escalations and field issues across Kubernetes, Linux networking and network infrastructure, and turns the findings into lasting product fixes.
• Collaborates with cross-functional storage, platform and cloud teams on designs that span multiple components.
• Provides guidance and mentoring to junior team members to set an example of software design and development excellence.

Education and Experience Required

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Typically 10+ years experience developing production software, including significant experience with distributed or infrastructure systems.

Knowledge and Skills

• Strong programming experience in a systems language (e.g., Go, C/C++, Java), including concurrency and testable design, and willingness to develop primarily in Go.
• Hands-on experience developing on Kubernetes, such as building controllers/operators and custom resources.
• Solid knowledge of Linux IP networking (TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, IPv6) and hands-on network troubleshooting.
• Experience designing distributed, highly available systems that tolerate partial failures.
• Proficiency in shell scripting (Bash) for tooling, automation and system setup.
• Excellent analytical, debugging and problem solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Background in enterprise storage systems or storage appliances.
• Professional experience developing in Go (Golang).
• Experience with software packaging, distribution and upgrades, such as container images, registries and rolling updates, including delivery to on-premises or air-gapped environments.
• Experience automating data-center network switches through APIs or network automation tools.
• Experience orchestrating firmware or OS upgrades for network devices or appliances.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes networking internals (e.g., CNI).
• Experience with RPC frameworks (e.g., gRPC), secure communications (TLS), and Linux system services.
• Experience with Python for test automation.
• Experience with observability (Prometheus metrics, structured logging) and supporting production systems in the field.
• Effective use of AI-assisted development tools, with strong engineering judgment in reviewing and validating their output.

The expected salary/wage range for this position is provided below. Actual offer may vary from this range based upon geographic location, work experience, education/training, and/or skill level. – United States of America: Annual Salary USD 165,500 - 313,500 in Colorado // 157,000 - 361,000 in North Carolina The listed salary range reflects base salary. Variable incentives may also be offered.
