Job summary

Blue Origin LLC in Seattle, WA seeks a Principal Software Engineer to lead the DESA team’s technical strategy for New Glenn. You will shape software used to design, produce, and operate launch vehicles and mentor engineers across domains.

You will collaborate with enterprise technology leaders, drive architectural roadmaps, and champion best practices while advancing AI-enabled tools and scalable systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline.
• 10+ years of experience writing and deploying software in production environments.
• 7+ years of experience developing distributed backend systems and utilizing AWS.
• Experience with typed languages (Java, C++, C#) and untyped languages (Python, JavaScript).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present to senior leadership.
• Strong fundamentals in algorithms and data structures; problem-solver in unfamiliar domains.
• Experience mentoring software engineers in team settings.
• U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the United States; interest in aerospace.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical strategy and vision across multiple domains from design to flight operations.
• Present complex technical strategies to senior leadership and executives.
• Collaborate with engineers and enterprise teams to architect and execute roadmaps.
• Identify and apply AI to improve user experiences and development efficiency.
• Utilize DynamoDB, AWS services, React, GraphQL, REST; promote best practices.
• Champion operational excellence with low tech debt and high availability.
• Lead design reviews and mentor developers up to Senior SDE level.
