Job summary

Liberty Mutual Insurance is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the modernization of our Surety technology platform. This hybrid role requires two days in the office weekly at our Plano tech hub, with potential locations including Boston and Portsmouth.

You will drive architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and partner with product and delivery teams to deliver scalable, globally capable solutions.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience designing and building software systems with principal-level technical impact.
• Strong track record leading technical discussions and driving design decisions.
• Experience in agile environments and collaborating across engineering, product, and operations.
• Ability to coach and influence engineers at multiple levels.
• Experience modernizing complex enterprise systems is highly desirable.
• Eight+ years of software engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Shape the technical direction for Surety underwriting modernization from legacy systems to a modern React/NestJS/AWS platform.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and delivery teams to translate business needs into scalable tech solutions.
• Provide technical guidance and design support for contractor-led delivery teams to improve quality and execution predictability.
• Offer architectural leadership for multiple engineering teams and lead design discussions.
• Review decisions to enhance quality, maintainability, and scalability; mentor engineers to raise the team's technical bar.
