Job summary

SciTec in Dayton, OH is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the Data Storage Domain. This role is hands-on and combines engineering with technical stewardship to guide storage design and implementation.

You will evaluate technologies, build reference implementations, mentor engineers, and collaborate across teams to raise the organization\'s storage capabilities while supporting DoD-related work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, or a related field.
• 10+ years of professional experience designing, implementing, and troubleshooting production software systems, including significant experience with data storage systems.

Responsibilities

• Assess storage technologies, data access patterns, recurring problems, and capability gaps across engineering teams.
• Define evaluation criteria and benchmark workloads to select and maintain core storage technologies, patterns, and practices.
• Document ADRs, reference architectures, and tuning guides for the team.
• Build and maintain validated reference implementations, starter templates, and reusable configurations for common storage use cases.
• Guide data modeling, schema design, indexing, and query planning, plus performance optimization.
• Lead replication, partitioning, capacity planning, backup and recovery, and failure analysis efforts.
• Collaborate with domain leads on cross-domain problems such as latency, throughput, and end-to-end performance.
