Job summary

At Atlassian, Principal Engineers shape customer-facing products end to end across React/TypeScript front ends, backend services, and APIs. You will set architecture and drive product strategy while partnering with product managers, designers, and platform teams.

You will design AI-enabled experiences, leverage telemetry to measure outcomes, and mentor others to raise the engineering bar. This role emphasizes craft, impact, and scalable delivery across teams.

We're looking for product-minded Principal Engineers. This is a hands-on P60 individual-contributor role for engineers who sit at the seam between deep technical craft and sharp product judgment — and can hold both at once. You'll own customer-facing products end to end across the full stack, shape what gets built rather than just how, and build the next generation of AI-native and agentic experiences used by teams all over the planet.

Responsibilities

Own customer-facing product features end to end across the full stack — React/TypeScript front ends, backend services, and APIs — taking ambiguous problems all the way to shipped, measured outcomes.

Make architecture and technical decisions in service of user and business outcomes; let product goals drive the engineering, not the other way around.

Use telemetry and user behavior to shape design — define success metrics (north star and guardrails), instrument, monitor, run root-cause deep dives, and change your mind when the data says so.

Design and build AI-enabled and agentic experiences, integrating LLMs and AI workflows into products that reach millions of users.

Set technical direction for your team and influence product strategy, partnering closely with product managers, designers, and platform teams.

Raise the engineering bar through code, design reviews, coaching, and mentoring — leading by craft as a senior individual contributor.

Find the highest-leverage problems in ambiguous spaces, prototype quickly, and drive prototypes to production-grade quality, reliability, and performance at scale.

In The United States, we have three geographic pay zones. For this role, our current base pay ranges for new hires in each zone are:

Zone A: $209,700 - $273,775

Zone B: $188,730 - $246,398

Zone C: $174,051 - $227,233
