Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the In-Vehicle AI Assistant platform, spanning Android AAOS client apps and cloud-backed services. You will shape a multi-year technical vision and work across Cloud AI/ML, In-Cabin UX, Security, and Infrastructure teams to deliver a scalable cabin intelligence ecosystem.

Based in Mountain View, CA or Seattle, WA with optional remote work, you will drive architectural decisions, mentor senior engineers, and shepherd end-to-end

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 12+ years of professional software development experience designing large-scale distributed systems spanning client apps and cloud microservices.
• Broad technical depth across Android client architecture (Kotlin/Java) and backend cloud integration (microservices, REST, gRPC, streaming APIs).
• History of cross-functional technical leadership driving architectural alignment across engineering organizations.
• Deep expertise in client-server interaction patterns, state synchronization, and low-latency networking protocols.
• Ability to define multi-year technical roadmaps and translate vision into scalable platform architectures.

Responsibilities

• Define and own end-to-end architecture for GM’s In-Vehicle AI Assistant platform across Android client and cloud backend services.
• Drive cross-functional technical strategy with Cloud AI/ML, In-Cabin UX, Product Management, Security, and Data Engineering.
• Architect the hybrid edge-cloud orchestration layer balancing on-device latency, network bandwidth, and cloud compute cost.
• Establish engineering standards and API protocols for real-time client-server communication using gRPC and streaming interfaces.
• Evaluate and integrate AI/ML agent frameworks and LLM orchestrators into the in-cabin ecosystem.
• Unblock architectural dependencies and resolve trade-offs in reliability, privacy, and data streaming.
• Drive platform-wide testing, evaluation pipelines, and telemetry for latency, accuracy, and health.
• Mentor Staff and Senior engineers across client and backend disciplines.
