Description

Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking an innovative computational biologist to drive the development and optimization of bioinformatics pipelines and databases, leveraging cutting‐edge technologies and approaches. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with a passion for data management and database development. This role requires experience in creating and optimizing bioinformatics pipelines, along with a strong interest in working with multimodal data (e.g., sequence, structure, omics, etc.) and diverse approaches including ML/AI to accelerate new therapeutic concepts and disease understanding.

As a member of the Computational Innovation (CI)) organization, the incumbent will work as a member of cross‐functional project teams, contributing to or driving the discovery of First‐in‐Class or Breakthrough drugs. As a Computational Biology Partner for Data and Infrastructure, your contributions will directly impact foundational elements of drug discovery, including data management, database development, and pipeline optimization. In addition to advancing bioinformatics capabilities, the successful candidate will contribute to the identification and establishment of external collaborations that will deliver on the aforementioned goals. The successful individual will help acquire/develop and champion the use of multimodal data (e.g., sequence, structure, omics, etc.) and diverse approaches including ML/AI to accelerate new therapeutic concepts and disease understanding.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and optimize bioinformatics pipelines using Nextflow and other workflow management systems to support data processing and analysis.
  • Design and implement robust database solutions, including both SQL and non-SQL databases, to efficiently manage and query large-scale biological datasets.
  • Apply advanced computational techniques, including machine learning/AI, to integrate and analyze multimodal data (e.g., sequence, structure, omics, etc.) and generate actionable insights.
  • Build and enhance computational biology tools and infrastructure to support functional genomics and sequencing technologies and support the translation of biological data into insights.
  • Help educate and train Boehringer Ingelheim colleagues in computational biology and related areas.
  • Continue to develop scientific expertise, credentials, and drug development expertise by keeping abreast of relevant literature, by expanding scientific/technical knowledge, and by publishing in peer-reviewed journals and speaking at internationally recognized scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to the greater good, including departmental administration, scientific culture, and technical evaluation of in-licensing opportunities.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in biological, statistical, computational, or other quantitative science.
  • Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in drug discovery or biomedical research environment after completing a doctoral degree, with at least two (2) years’ experience in drug discovery, strongly preferred.
  • Several years of experience in independently leading computational biology-related projects using omics data Is a recognized science and/or technology subject matter expert across BI with a sustained publication and external presentation record.
  • She/he identifies new methodologies, protocols and/or test procedures that contribute to department and Discovery Research goals and proactively proposes creative solutions to department or Discovery Research leadership.
Additional Requirements:
  • Experience in leading computational biology-related projects using omics data Demonstrated experience in genomics or related areas (eg proteomics) and the use of integrative computational biology approaches.
  • Experience in more than one omics area, or structural bioinformatics is a plus.
  • Experience in project leadership or driving forward key initiatives within larger projects Demonstrated expertise in Python, R or other languages, together with data visualization frameworks ( eg , ggplot2, matplotlib etc) Demonstrated expertise in database systems including SQL and non-SQL versions!
  • Broad knowledge of a wide set of computational biology tools
  • Desire to learn basic statistics and ardent desire to apply them.
  • A keen interest in continuous development, such as reading new papers, learning new techniques in machine learning for biological problems.
  • A good team player mentality and good ability to explain complex topics to scientists from other subject areas.
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required) Must be 18 years of age or older
Compensation Data

This position offers a base salary typically between $140,000 and $222,000. The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance-based bonus and or other compensation elements. For an overview of our benefits please click here.
