Job summary

MACOM in Lowell, MA is seeking an experienced RF/microwave design engineer to create control circuits for aerospace, defense, and telecom applications. You will design, test, and release circuits using Si and GaAs technologies, and collaborate with test, packaging, and production teams to meet performance goals.

Responsibilities include prototype builds, evaluation, and transfer to production within a formal stage-gate process.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering (BS, MS, or PhD).
• 10+ years of RF / microwave circuit design experience.
• Proficiency with microwave simulation tools such as ADS or AWR.
• Experience with high-yield, low-cost design and integration.
• Familiarity with RF/microwave transitions between connectors, transmission lines, waveguide, RFICs/MMICs, and packaging.

Job Description

In MACOM’s Diode Business Line, we design control function circuits for aerospace and defense, test and measurement, cellular/5G, medical, space/hi-rel, automotive and other wireless applications. We are looking for an experienced RF / microwave electronic design engineer. You will:

• Be responsible for the design, layout, test, and release of new control circuits for RF and microwave applications based on Si and GaAs technologies.
• Design products such as switches, limiters, digital and analog phase shifters, digital and analog attenuators, detectors, frequency multipliers, mixers, modulators/demodulators, CMOS drivers & sequencers and multi-function hybrid / multi-chip modules in SMT and connectorized package form.
• Be responsible for all design activities and related product development activities from kickoff through engineering evaluation to product release.
• Work with our test engineering team and write test and assembly plans and procedures.
• Work with our package and assembly teams to come up with new and more cost-effective packaging and assembly methods.
• Initiate prototype builds and manage product characterization. You will design evaluation and characterization fixtures, direct or perform measurements, and process and present evaluation data against the product development goals.
• Work with our Product Engineering group to transfer the product to production.
• Follow a formal stage-gate new product introduction process.

Job Requirements

• Degree (BS, MS, or PhD) in Electrical Engineering.
• More than 10 years of experience in RF / microwave circuit design.
• Fluent with modern microwave simulation tools such as ADS or AWR.
• Familiar with integration and experience designing for high yield and low cost.
• Familiar with design and simulation of complex RF / microwave transitions between connectors, transmission lines, waveguide, RFICs / MMICs, wire and/or ribbon bonds, feed-through pins, laminate / ceramic substrates, SMT / leaded components, etc.
• Experience with EM simulations (Momentum, EmPro, HFSS, etc). Thermal simulation experience is a plus (Ansys Icepak or equivalent).
• Understanding and practical knowledge of working with the Smith Chart for impedance matching and tuning.
• Operation and calibration of s-parameter and nonlinear measurements using industry standard test equipment (spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, power meter, thermal imaging, etc.).
• Understanding of a variety of microwave measurements which include but are not limited to S-Parameters, IP3/TOI, compression/limiting, harmonics, DC and/or RF continuous and pulse power, noise figure, switching speed, conversion loss/gain, etc.
• Experience with the design of microwave printed circuit boards including both electrical and thermal aspects.
• Device or process modeling experience is a plus (ADS, AWR, TCAD, Silvaco, etc).
• Familiarity with SolidWorks, AutoCAD or other drawing packages is a plus.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build long lasting partnerships.

Salary Range

The Salary Range for this position is $133,000 – $198,000. Actual salary offered to candidate will depend on several factors, including but not limited to, work location, relevant candidates’ experience, education, and specific knowledge, skills, and abilities.
