AV in Leesburg, VA seeks a Principal RF/DSP Engineer to own the most challenging RF targets end‑to‑end for Counter‑UAS products. You will design experiments, develop algorithms, implement production C++ code, and validate performance with real RF data in field settings.

The role emphasizes direction finding, antenna‑array processing, and reusable signal‑processing components. You will lead a team of engineers and influence the technical roadmap while remaining hands‑on.

Competenze

• BS or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related technical field.
• Substantial professional experience developing RF, communications, radar, electronic‑warfare, or related signal‑processing systems.
• Strong DSP and digital‑communications fundamentals, including several of the listed areas.
• Demonstrated ability to independently investigate an unfamiliar signal or system using measurements and controlled experiments.
• Experience analyzing real complex‑IQ data and implementing DSP algorithms.
• Proficiency writing production‑quality C++ in a Linux environment.
• Hands‑on experience with direction finding and antenna‑array signal processing: bearing estimation, array calibration, and practical DF error sources.
• Experience creating automated tests and replaying recorded data through algorithm pipelines.
• Experience with Git or equivalent and collaboration in code reviews.
• US Citizenship is required.

• Take ownership of our most difficult unfamiliar RF targets: generate hypotheses, rank them, and design experiments.
• Analyze wideband complexIQ recordings from known and unfamiliar RF systems.
• Characterize signal bandwidth, timing, modulation, synchronization, and other properties.
• Design controlled experiments that isolate transmitter behavior and reveal waveform structure.
• Develop algorithms for burst detection, synchronization, demodulation, classification, and tracking.
• Design, implement, and own reusable signal‑processing components used across the team.
• Own and improve line‑of‑bearing performance: bearing estimation, array calibration, and DF error sources.
• Diagnose and mitigate real‑world DF issues (mutual coupling, multipath, etc.).
• Design array calibration procedures and validate them in various test environments.
• Distinguish target signals from noise and interference.
• Implement and optimize production DSP capabilities in modern C++.
• Validate algorithms with diverse data and lead field validation campaigns.
• Measure detection probability, false‑alarm rate, latency, and performance.
• Diagnose failures (CFO, timing, multipath, etc.).
• Lead and review efforts of other signal‑processing engineers.
• Identify emerging target classes and recommend technical investments.
